South Ockendon
South Ockendon is a village and Church of England parish in the Thurrock district and unitary area in Essex in the East of England, United Kingdom. It lies on the border with Greater London, just outside the M25 motorway. The location to the north is North Ockendon. South Ockendon village became an area for premade residences (prefabs) suiting bombed-out homeowners of East London/West Essex in the extremely late 40s. Much of the original post-war building and construction was embarked on by former German prisoners of war. The majority of these were demolished in the late-1960s when a huge Greater London Council estate, Lecaplan "concrete" building houses-- the Flowers' Estate-- was built to replace them, once more with pre-fabricated houses, albeit of a premium style. The Lecaplan Type B type of pre-cast concrete (huge panel concrete) balcony is constructed in rows of 8 residential properties to a layout by J C Tilley as well as made by W. & C. French. In the 1970s the Ford Motor Company factory at Aveley housed Ford's Advanced Vehicle Operations which constructed vehicles such as the RS1600. The plant was unwinded gradually from the late 90's however closed entirely in 2004, when the last 150 work were shed. Most of the 150 employees accepted transfers to various other Ford or secondary websites around Essex.
