Benbecula is an island of the Outer Hebrides, in the Atlantic Ocean off the west coastline of Scotland. In the 2011 census it had a typically resident population of 1,283, with a large portion of Roman Catholics. It forms part of the location provided by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar or the Western Isles Council. The island has to do with 12 kilometres from west to eastern as well as a comparable range from north to southern. It exists between the islands of North Uist as well as South Uist; it is attached to both by roadway causeways. Travel to any of the various other Hebridean islands, or to the British landmass, is by air or sea. Benbecula Airport on the island has everyday trips to Glasgow, Stornoway as well as Barra. A direct service to Inverness was introduced in 2006 however terminated in May 2007. There are no straight ferry services from Benbecula to the landmass, yet a service run by Caledonian MacBrayne from Lochboisdale on South Uist gives a five-hour going across to Oban on the landmass, whilst one more solution from Lochmaddy on North Uist provides a two-hour going across to Uig on the Inner Hebridean island of Skye, and also therefore to the mainland via the Skye Bridge. Ferry services from the islands of Berneray (connected by causeway to North Uist) and Eriskay (linked to South Uist) connect to the other Outer Hebridean islands of Harris and Barra specifically. There is a thick cluster of lochs throughout almost the entire island, and mostly all of the island is listed below 20 metres in elevation.
