Pevensey is a town and civil parish in the Wealden area of East Sussex, England. The primary village lies five miles (8 kilometres) north-east of Eastbourne, one mile (1.6 km) inland from Pevensey Bay. The settlement of Pevensey Bay forms part of the parish. It was here that William the Conqueror made the landing in his invasion of England in 1066 after crossing the English Channel from Normandy, France. In 1207 the community was approved an imperial charter by King John and was regulated by Pevensey Corporation. With the decrease in the town's value by the 19th century, the Corporation was at some point dissolved in 1886 as well as the community shed its district condition. The documents of the Corporation are kept in the East Sussex Record Office at Lewes, and also a voluntary body, the Pevensey Town Trust, was created to take care of the residential or commercial property which had formerly belonged to the Corporation, most notably the Old Court House. Pevensey is now a town, with a church council consisting of twelve chosen councillors. Three councillors are chosen to the Wealden Area Council to stand for Pevensey; the Member of Parliament is Hugh Merriman, who represents the Bexhill and Battle Constituency, of which Pevensey is component. Pevensey is likewise part of the selecting ward called Pevensey as well as Westham. The population of this ward at the 2011 Census was 9,467.
