Oakham is an old English market town in Rutland in the East Midlands of England. It sits to the west of Rutland Water, which is one of the biggest man-made lakes in Europe. It is home to All Saints' Church, erected in the 14th Century, and Oakham Castle, which has its roots in the 12th Century. Only the great hall of the castle is still there, and it is a famous tourist attraction in the area.
Every Wednesday and Saturday in Oakham there is a market where a number of local goods are on sale. Every third Saturday there is a farmer's market on Gaol Street, where local farmers sell their products.
A notable landmark in Oakham is the Oakham Signal Box, which Airfix used as a design for all their model rail products. Another tradition that the town has is hanging horseshoes in the great hall of the castle. When a member of royalty or peer of the realm visited Oakham, they had to pay a charge in the form of a horseshoe. The horseshoes hang upside-down which is widely seen to be unlucky, but in Oakham this was to stop the Devil from resting in the hollow.
