Bellshill
Bellshill is a town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It's positioned 10 miles to the south east of Glasgow city centre and 37 miles west of Edinburgh, as well as being in close proximity to other towns which include Motherwell, Hamilton and Coatbridge. Since 1996, it's been a part of the Greater Glasgow metropolitan area. With a population of around 20,705, a study by the Halifax Building Society suggested that early in 2005, the town was the UK's property hot spot, witnessing a rise in home prices by 46%. This resulted in the standard house price in the area as being around £105,000. It's suggested that the town dates from the 17th century, which originally featured a line of quarry workers' homes owned by Mr. Bell, the proprietor of a stone quarry towards the south of the town. The development of Bellshill, however, mostly occurred soon after the closure of the quarry at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Improvements have continued all through the twentieth century. In recent years, the Streetscape Project, a project aiming to achieve the town's regeneration and modernisation of the town centre, occurred between 2007 and 2010, which designed a one way system around the main street making the area a lot more friendly for pedestrians. Since the middle of the 1980s, the town has been recognised particularly for creating respected and influential popular music, with bands including the Soup Dragons, BMX Bandits and Teenage Fanclub hailing from the town. A Channel 4 TV series, 'Sounds of the Suburbs', celebrated the music of the area, often referred to as the 'Bellshill Sound' or the 'Bellshill Beat'.
