The London Borough of Southwark in south London, England forms a part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames towards the City of London. It was created in 1965 when 3 smaller sized council places amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. This integrated the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, and also the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey. All districts of the area are within the London postal district.
The borough covers a total area of about 11.14 square miles. Towards the south are the London Boroughs of Bromley and Croydon. Southwark has a wide variety of housing, which includes council housing, including the post-Blitz Aylesbury Estate and the Heygate Estate to supply homes to low-income residents. About 31 percent of householders are owner-occupiers.
The borough is residence to a number of cultural, historical and notable attractions. The Shard, Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and Borough Market which are the biggest of the venues in Southwark to draw domestic and international tourism. Dulwich hosts the Dulwich Picture Gallery and the Imperial War Museum in Elephant and Castle.
