Prior to land improvement the location of Bembridge and Yaverland was virtually an island, separated from the rest of the Isle of Wight by Brading Haven. On the Joan Blaeu map of 1665, Bembridge is revealed as Binbridge I?le, almost separated from the remainder of Wight by River Yar. Before the Victorian age Bembridge was a collection of wood huts and also farmhouses, which only combined right into a real village with the building of the church in 1827 (later on rebuilt in 1846).
