The London Borough of Hillingdon is the westernmost borough in Greater London. It was formed in 1965 from the districts of Hayes and Harlington, Ruislip-Northwood, Uxbridge, and Yiewsley and West Drayton in the historic county of Middlesex. Hillingdon Council governs the borough, having its headquarters within the Civic Centre in Uxbridge. The borough's residential areas expanded with the extension of the Metropolitan Railway from Harrow on the Hill to Uxbridge in the early twentieth century and also the gradual establishment of stops along the line, becoming known as 'Metro-land'.
As outlined by population estimates from the middle of 2014, Hillingdon presently includes a permanent population of around 292690 people.
The borough maintains over 200 green spaces, totalling about 1800 acres. As much of the area is inside the Metropolitan Green Belt it was, in 2008, one of the least densely populated of all the London boroughs; open spaces differ in size from the Colne Valley Regional Park to smaller sized gardens like Lake Farm Country Park.
