Guttering in Lewes

Guttering is a key facet of the roofing of your home. It provides aesthetic benefits as well as making sure rainwater that runs off your roof is effectively channeled away from the edge of the building and down into drains. The key to selecting the most appropriate guttering for your property is understanding the needs of your pre-existing roof. For instance, steeper or larger roofs will demand guttering able to channel a larger flow of water. It might be appealing to simply replace like for like, but an experienced guttering company will be able to survey your property to understand your needs, and suggest for you the most appropriate guttering for your roof. Guttering is available in a number of types and materials. For materials, PVC is the most popular. PVC guttering is very reasonably priced while still being durable. It's available in a variety of colours and styles. However, guttering is also manufactured from metal, generally either steel, aluminium or cast iron. While these materials are usually more expensive than PVC, they also last longer and are suitable for period properties as they may have a more traditionally designed aesthetic. Different moulds of guttering will also affect the flow of the water. Half round and square guttering are widespread and will suit many homes, while deep flow or ogee guttering are suited to use on properties that demand increased water flow. Ogee guttering also has a unique mould which has an impressive appearance. Guttering is also available in a variety of colours, from traditional white or black to brown and grey. Furthermore, some PVC guttering can be purchased in a cast iron effect.

Lewes

Lewes is the county town of the administrative county of East Sussex in England. It is a civil parish and it is the centre of the Lewes local government district. In accordance with the 2001 Census, it has a population of around 15988 and an area of 4.4 square miles. Customarily, the town has actually been recognised as a bridging point and a market town, and it is mainly considered as a communications and tourist-oriented town in the present considering the many historical landmarks. The historic pattern of the streets continues to exist, including a significant number of mediaeval structure plots and oak framed houses, such as The Fifteenth Century Bookshop set on the High Street. The service sectors are the biggest companies to a significant extent, with over 60 per cent of the population employed in that sector in 2001. Nonetheless, the town continues to be celebrated as one of England's finest producers of ale, with beers, wines and spirits continuing to be distributed from Lewes under the 'Harveys' name since 1794. An event with specific significance for the town is the Lewes Bonfire celebrations occurring on Fifth November, Guy Fawkes Night. Not only does this celebrate the date of the discovering of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605, the date is additionally important for the town as a commemoration for the 17 Protestant martyrs burnt at the stake for their faith during the Marian Persecutions. The controversial celebration which constitutes the burning of an effigy of Pope Paul V, the pope during the time of the martyrdoms, are the biggest and most prominent bonfire night celebrations in England. FAQs

What are gutters normally made from?

In the UK, gutters are normally made from uPVC. It’s a hardy plastic that won’t rot, warp or tarnish very easily, which is why it’s so popular. It’s the same material that’s used for most homes’ windows these days; they don’t have to be the standard white as they can be made into a range of colours. Expect to pay an average of £500 for the supply and installation of uPVC guttering, and more if you require scaffolding.

Other materials that are popular for gutters include copper, aluminium and cast iron. These are much more expensive – you might be looking at around £1500 or more for the supply and installation – but they give a more polished look and are often used on period properties or those in a conservation area. If you're considering these types of gutters, make sure you get a few quotes from different roofline companies so you can compare the different materials.

In the past, gutters were made from wood, asbestos concrete or stone. They were often lined with lead to stop the water from seeping through. When it was discovered that asbestos was seriously harmful, it of course stopped being used. Wood was prone to rotting, even with lead lining, and stone is heavy and expensive. So when uPVC came along, it became an affordable and easy material to use for gutters so homeowners could be confident that rainwater will be kept away from the foundations of their properties. It’s important to keep gutters clear from leaves and debris, because if they become blocked, they can make water to fall against your property’s walls, causing damp.

Is it easy to replace gutters?

If you live in an average home with an average amount of guttering and you’re used to a bit of DIY, it’s relatively easy to replace gutters. But if you have a home that’s more than two-storey or you have guttering that’s more complicated, it’s best left to the professionals.

Lots of homes these days have uPVC guttering. uPVC is a hard-wearing plastic that will last a long time without much maintenance except your usual gutter clearing. It’s relatively light, so lots of people think it’s easy to replace uPVC gutters. If you live in a bungalow, you may be able to just use a ladder to take down your old guttering and replace it with new uPVC gutters, but if you live in a two-storey home it can be a bit more complicated. If you do attempt to replace your gutters yourself, make sure you’ve got a sturdy ladder that will comfortably reach the right height, and never rest it on the fascia or the guttering itself.

If you have cast iron or copper guttering, this is much heavier and bulkier than uPVC. Certainly don’t try to replace these on your own – make sure you have another competent DIYer to help you. Reputable roofline specialists will use scaffold towers to make it easier to handle heavy gutters and they will always work in pairs on this type of guttering, so make sure you have the right tools and equipment to work with.

Just because it’s easy to replace gutters, it doesn’t mean you should. It’s better to ask a reliable roofline company to help you, since they have the skills to fit guttering properly and have experience with working at height.

    How do you replace gutters?
The best way to replace gutters is to ask a reputable installer to do it for you. They have all the right safety equipment and knowledge to do it. But if you’re a competent DIYer, you could have a go at replacing the gutters yourself. If you do, you could save yourself an average of £359 on labour costs. The biggest risk from replacing guttering yourself is the height. Even if you’re on a secure ladder, if you’re not used to working at height you could seriously hurt yourself. If your home is a bungalow, the risk is lower, but anything two storeys and above carries significant risk. If you’re still happy to go ahead, there are a few things you’ll need to fit gutters yourself:
    • A sturdy ladder
    • Gloves and safety goggles
    • A hammer and nails to secure your fascia so it doesn’t fall down mid-replacement
    • A hacksaw – this will cut through uPVC guttering – just make sure you leave a margin of error with every cut you make
    • Cable ties or rope to secure the existing gutters while you dismantle them, so they don’t fall off
    • All the right fixings and brackets to secure the guttering
    • An electric drill and/or screwdrivers
Once you’ve removed the old guttering, you can get started with the new ones. Follow these steps:
    1. Add a gutter bracket to the top of the fascia board at the opposite end to the stop-end outlet, if you have one. Then tie a piece of string around the base of the bracket.
    2. You’ll need to place the gutter outlet accurately over the drain. Hold a plumb line against the fascia directly over the drain, and mark that position with a pencil. Following the manufacturer’s advice on the number of screws to use, fit the gutter outlet no more than 50mm below the level of the roof tiles.
    3. Stretch the piece of string you tied on the bracket along the fascia board, and tie it to the outlet. Make sure you check with a spirit level that the string slopes towards the outlet.
    4. Mark the positions of the other brackets. They should be no more than 800mm apart, or 600mm if your roof is very steep. They also shouldn’t be any more than 150mm from a joint or fitting. Then fit the rest of the brackets.
    5. Fit a stop-end to the first length of gutter and clip it into position on the brackets. At the other end, fit a union piece and screw it into the fascia.
    6. Then fit the next length of gutter into it, and the next until you’re finished. Cut the last one to fit using your hacksaw before attaching a stop-end. Then make sure all the joints line up with the insertion depth marks on the fittings. Then you’re done!
    What is a gutter?

A gutter is part of the system that takes rainwater away from a building. Every home will have some form of guttering system to stop water from dripping off the roof and into the walls. It’s important to keep your gutters clear because if water starts to seep into your home’s walls, you’re likely to get damp.

A guttering system consists of half pipes, troughs, bends and downpipes. They’re usually cylindrical in shape but they may be square on some homes and in countries outside of the UK. Technically, the gutter is the part that you’ll see across your roof that collects rainwater. The water will then feed into a downpipe from your roof’s edge to the base of your home, where you can collect it in something like a water butt, or it will be discharged to a surface water drain or soakaway.

In early times, gutters used to be made from lined wood or stone. Lead was often used as the liner to stop rainwater from seeping through the material, but you won’t see it used much anymore. These days, most homes have uPVC guttering as it’s a hardwearing plastic that should last a long time. But you’ll also see gutters made from aluminium, cast iron and copper, especially on period homes or those in a conservation area.

Every home needs a guttering system to ensure that rainwater doesn’t affect the foundations of the property. It’s also important to keep the gutters clear of debris like fallen leaves, as this will cause them to overflow, potentially causing water to soak into the walls and causing damp.
