Guttering in Droitwich

Guttering is an essential aspect of the roofing of your building. It offers visual benefits as well as ensuring that rainwater that runs off your roof is correctly channeled from the edge of the building and down into drains. The key to choosing the right guttering for your home is being familiar with the needs of your pre-existing roof. For example, steeper or bigger roofs will demand guttering capable of channeling a larger flow of water. It might be appealing to simply exchange like for like, but a professional guttering company will be able to survey the property to understand your requirements, and advise you on the most appropriate guttering for your roof. Guttering is available in several different types and materials. For materials, PVC is typically the most popular. PVC guttering is very economical while still being resilient. It's available in a variety of colours and styles. However, guttering is also manufactured from metal, usually either steel, aluminium or cast iron. While these materials are typically higher priced than PVC, they also last longer and are suitable for period properties as they may have a more traditionally designed appearance. Different moulds of guttering will also affect the flow of the water. Half round and square guttering are standard and will suit many properties, while deep flow or ogee guttering are suitable for use on properties that require increased water flow. Ogee guttering also has a unique mould which has a striking appearance. Guttering is also available in a range of colors, from traditional black or white to brown and grey. In addition, some PVC guttering can be found in a cast iron effect.

Droitwich

Droitwich Spa is a town in the north of the county of Worcestershire. Located on the River Salwarpe containing sizable deposits of salt, the extraction of salt has been an exploit taking place since the ancient period. The natural Droitwich salt water contains 2 and a half pounds of salt per gallon, which is 10 times greater than sea water. In the 19th century, John Corbett, the son of a Black Country barge owner, developed the town's spa services after the downturn of the salt industry. The Droitwich Spa Lido was an especially popular leisure destination, which was established in the 1930s as a public open air salt water swimming pool. Although the Lido was closed in the late 1990s, improvements in 2006 making it possible for the resuming of the centre in the summer of 2007 has enabled the Lido to continue as an enjoyable and eye-catching amusement. Droitwich is within Wychavon, a local government district that was the only area in the Midlands to appear in the Halifax 'Quality of Life Survey' in 2011, which was ranked as Sixth overall. A huge selection of leisure activities are accessible for the growing 22585 citizens recorded in the 2011 census. This consists of the options offered by the Droitwich Canal Network for walkers and cyclists, the multitude of independent and high street merchants, as well as various markets frequently occurring in the town. Celebrations occur throughout the year, and performances can be seen throughout the year at the Norbury Theatre. For all of your house upgrades, ensure to make use of reliable contractors in Droitwich Spa to make certain of quality.

    FAQs

What are gutters normally made from?

In the UK, gutters are normally made from uPVC. It’s a hardy plastic that won’t rot, warp or tarnish very easily, which is why it’s so popular. It’s the same material that’s used for most homes’ windows these days; they don’t have to be the standard white as they can be made into a range of colours. Expect to pay an average of £500 for the supply and installation of uPVC guttering, and more if you require scaffolding.

Other materials that are popular for gutters include copper, aluminium and cast iron. These are much more expensive – you might be looking at around £1500 or more for the supply and installation – but they give a more polished look and are often used on period properties or those in a conservation area. If you're considering these types of gutters, make sure you get a few quotes from different roofline companies so you can compare the different materials.

In the past, gutters were made from wood, asbestos concrete or stone. They were often lined with lead to stop the water from seeping through. When it was discovered that asbestos was seriously harmful, it of course stopped being used. Wood was prone to rotting, even with lead lining, and stone is heavy and expensive. So when uPVC came along, it became an affordable and easy material to use for gutters so homeowners could be confident that rainwater will be kept away from the foundations of their properties. It’s important to keep gutters clear from leaves and debris, because if they become blocked, they can make water to fall against your property’s walls, causing damp.

Is it easy to replace gutters?

If you live in an average home with an average amount of guttering and you’re used to a bit of DIY, it’s relatively easy to replace gutters. But if you have a home that’s more than two-storey or you have guttering that’s more complicated, it’s best left to the professionals.

Lots of homes these days have uPVC guttering. uPVC is a hard-wearing plastic that will last a long time without much maintenance except your usual gutter clearing. It’s relatively light, so lots of people think it’s easy to replace uPVC gutters. If you live in a bungalow, you may be able to just use a ladder to take down your old guttering and replace it with new uPVC gutters, but if you live in a two-storey home it can be a bit more complicated. If you do attempt to replace your gutters yourself, make sure you’ve got a sturdy ladder that will comfortably reach the right height, and never rest it on the fascia or the guttering itself.

If you have cast iron or copper guttering, this is much heavier and bulkier than uPVC. Certainly don’t try to replace these on your own – make sure you have another competent DIYer to help you. Reputable roofline specialists will use scaffold towers to make it easier to handle heavy gutters and they will always work in pairs on this type of guttering, so make sure you have the right tools and equipment to work with.

Just because it’s easy to replace gutters, it doesn’t mean you should. It’s better to ask a reliable roofline company to help you, since they have the skills to fit guttering properly and have experience with working at height.

    How do you replace gutters?
The best way to replace gutters is to ask a reputable installer to do it for you. They have all the right safety equipment and knowledge to do it. But if you’re a competent DIYer, you could have a go at replacing the gutters yourself. If you do, you could save yourself an average of £359 on labour costs. The biggest risk from replacing guttering yourself is the height. Even if you’re on a secure ladder, if you’re not used to working at height you could seriously hurt yourself. If your home is a bungalow, the risk is lower, but anything two storeys and above carries significant risk. If you’re still happy to go ahead, there are a few things you’ll need to fit gutters yourself:
    • A sturdy ladder
    • Gloves and safety goggles
    • A hammer and nails to secure your fascia so it doesn’t fall down mid-replacement
    • A hacksaw – this will cut through uPVC guttering – just make sure you leave a margin of error with every cut you make
    • Cable ties or rope to secure the existing gutters while you dismantle them, so they don’t fall off
    • All the right fixings and brackets to secure the guttering
    • An electric drill and/or screwdrivers
Once you’ve removed the old guttering, you can get started with the new ones. Follow these steps:
    1. Add a gutter bracket to the top of the fascia board at the opposite end to the stop-end outlet, if you have one. Then tie a piece of string around the base of the bracket.
    2. You’ll need to place the gutter outlet accurately over the drain. Hold a plumb line against the fascia directly over the drain, and mark that position with a pencil. Following the manufacturer’s advice on the number of screws to use, fit the gutter outlet no more than 50mm below the level of the roof tiles.
    3. Stretch the piece of string you tied on the bracket along the fascia board, and tie it to the outlet. Make sure you check with a spirit level that the string slopes towards the outlet.
    4. Mark the positions of the other brackets. They should be no more than 800mm apart, or 600mm if your roof is very steep. They also shouldn’t be any more than 150mm from a joint or fitting. Then fit the rest of the brackets.
    5. Fit a stop-end to the first length of gutter and clip it into position on the brackets. At the other end, fit a union piece and screw it into the fascia.
    6. Then fit the next length of gutter into it, and the next until you’re finished. Cut the last one to fit using your hacksaw before attaching a stop-end. Then make sure all the joints line up with the insertion depth marks on the fittings. Then you’re done!
How much do copper gutters cost?
Copper gutters are expensive – there's no doubt about it. But the look it can give a property might be just what you’re after. uPVC guttering doesn’t suit every home, and while it’s the cheapest option, some properties might not even be able to have it – for example, if you live in a conservation area or listed building. So if you’re going to have them installed, how much do copper gutters cost? Prices start at £18 per linear metre for half-round copper guttering. If you add all the bits you’ll need to go with them, like brackets and clips, you could be looking at around £40 per metre. That’s about double the cost of a uPVC or aluminium guttering system and about the same as cast iron guttering. Add in the installation costs and the average cost of a copper guttering system is £2,390. But copper gutters have a look that can’t be replicated by any other material, so if your home will suit them it might be worth the investment. It might be tempting to try to install copper guttering yourself, especially if you’re used to doing DIY. But copper guttering can be quite heavy to handle and is more fragile than uPVC, so it’s best leaving it to the professionals. On two-storey homes, roofline specialists would probably use scaffold towers to help them keep stable while they install the guttering, and will work in pairs. Since they carry out copper gutter installations all the time, they’ll be used to handling it and ensuring that they don’t scratch or damage this expensive product. So while it might seem cheaper to do it yourself, it won’t if you damage your copper gutters and have to fork out for new ones.
