Guttering in Brixham

Guttering is a crucial aspect of the roofing of your house. It provides visual advantages as well as ensuring that rainwater that runs off your roof is effectively channeled from the edge of the building and down into drains. The key to choosing the right guttering for your house is being familiar with the requirements of your current roof. For instance, steeper or bigger roofs will require guttering able to channel an increased flow of water. It may be appealing to simply exchange like for like, but an expert guttering company will be able to survey the property to understand your requirements, and advise you on the best guttering for your roof. Guttering is available in a variety of types and materials. For materials, PVC is typically the most popular. PVC guttering is very reasonably priced while still being durable. It's available in a variety of colours and styles. However, guttering is also available in metal, generally either steel, aluminium or cast iron. While these materials are generally more costly than PVC, they also last longer and are well suited to period properties as they have a more traditionally designed appearance. Different moulds of guttering will also impact the flow of the water. Half round and square guttering are standard and suit many properties, while deep flow or ogee guttering are suitable for use on buildings that demand increased water flow. Ogee guttering also has a unique mould which has an attractive appearance. Guttering is also available in a variety of colours, from traditional black or white to brown and grey. Furthermore, some PVC guttering can be purchased in a cast iron effect.

Brixham

Brixham is a modest fishing town and civil parish within the district of Torbay in the English county of Devon. The town is to the southern end of Torbay, over the bay from Torquay. Fishing and tourism are the major industries in the town. The landscape of the town is hilly, its dock is continually being used for fishing trawlers. According to the 2011 Census, Brixham boasts a resident population of roughly 16,693. The population of the town has been expanding since the 19th century, measured as 3,671 in 1801 and increasing to 8,092 in 1901. Despite the discovery of archaeological evidence suggesting the settlement of people in the ice age and trading in the Bronze Age, the first specific evidence of the town comes from the Saxon period. It is actually suggested that the Saxon settlement came from Hampshire in the sixth century. Lots of the town's history may be recognised in its street names. As an example, Pump Street is where the pump traditionally stood and Monksbridge was a bridge constructed by the monks of Totnes Priory. There are also several well-liked attractions accessible in the town. The replica of Sir Francis Drake's ship, 'Golden Hind' is an especially successful tourist attraction, which is permanently moored on the docks. Annually, Brixham hosts the Cowtown carnival, a clear reminder of the time in which Brixham was two separate communities, with only a marshy lane to connect them. Cowtown was the location on top of the town's hill where the farmers resided. For all your house improvement work, be sure that you employ reliable experts in Brixham to make sure that you get the top quality service.

    FAQs

How much do copper gutters cost?
Copper gutters are expensive – there's no doubt about it. But the look it can give a property might be just what you’re after. uPVC guttering doesn’t suit every home, and while it’s the cheapest option, some properties might not even be able to have it – for example, if you live in a conservation area or listed building. So if you’re going to have them installed, how much do copper gutters cost? Prices start at £18 per linear metre for half-round copper guttering. If you add all the bits you’ll need to go with them, like brackets and clips, you could be looking at around £40 per metre. That’s about double the cost of a uPVC or aluminium guttering system and about the same as cast iron guttering. Add in the installation costs and the average cost of a copper guttering system is £2,390. But copper gutters have a look that can’t be replicated by any other material, so if your home will suit them it might be worth the investment. It might be tempting to try to install copper guttering yourself, especially if you’re used to doing DIY. But copper guttering can be quite heavy to handle and is more fragile than uPVC, so it’s best leaving it to the professionals. On two-storey homes, roofline specialists would probably use scaffold towers to help them keep stable while they install the guttering, and will work in pairs. Since they carry out copper gutter installations all the time, they’ll be used to handling it and ensuring that they don’t scratch or damage this expensive product. So while it might seem cheaper to do it yourself, it won’t if you damage your copper gutters and have to fork out for new ones.
Do you need scaffolding to replace guttering?

You don’t always need scaffolding to replace guttering. If your home is a bungalow, the tradespeople might only need a ladder to replace your guttering. It’s when your home is two storeys or more that scaffolding is more necessary.

You might not need full scaffolding for a simple two-storey home. Guttering specialists use scaffold towers, which are the platforms you see underneath the scaffolding, where the installation is relatively straightforward. You might need scaffolding to replace guttering when there are obstructions to towers being used – for example, if you have a conservatory or the ground is very uneven. It's more likely that specialist roofline companies will use scaffold towers when necessary. Sole traders that replace guttering as part of their services may be comfortable using sturdy ladders.

There’s no legal requirement to say that you must have scaffolding when fitting guttering, but it is a good idea when working on homes rather than bungalows. If you’re unsure whether you need full scaffolding for your gutter replacement project, get a few quotes from reputable businesses of different sizes. If you’ve been quoted by one company that you need full scaffolding whereas everyone else says that only towers are needed, it’s likely that the job is perfectly safe to carry out with just towers.

    What is a gutter?

A gutter is part of the system that takes rainwater away from a building. Every home will have some form of guttering system to stop water from dripping off the roof and into the walls. It’s important to keep your gutters clear because if water starts to seep into your home’s walls, you’re likely to get damp.

A guttering system consists of half pipes, troughs, bends and downpipes. They’re usually cylindrical in shape but they may be square on some homes and in countries outside of the UK. Technically, the gutter is the part that you’ll see across your roof that collects rainwater. The water will then feed into a downpipe from your roof’s edge to the base of your home, where you can collect it in something like a water butt, or it will be discharged to a surface water drain or soakaway.

In early times, gutters used to be made from lined wood or stone. Lead was often used as the liner to stop rainwater from seeping through the material, but you won’t see it used much anymore. These days, most homes have uPVC guttering as it’s a hardwearing plastic that should last a long time. But you’ll also see gutters made from aluminium, cast iron and copper, especially on period homes or those in a conservation area.

Every home needs a guttering system to ensure that rainwater doesn’t affect the foundations of the property. It’s also important to keep the gutters clear of debris like fallen leaves, as this will cause them to overflow, potentially causing water to soak into the walls and causing damp.

What are gutters normally made from?

In the UK, gutters are normally made from uPVC. It’s a hardy plastic that won’t rot, warp or tarnish very easily, which is why it’s so popular. It’s the same material that’s used for most homes’ windows these days; they don’t have to be the standard white as they can be made into a range of colours. Expect to pay an average of £500 for the supply and installation of uPVC guttering, and more if you require scaffolding.

Other materials that are popular for gutters include copper, aluminium and cast iron. These are much more expensive – you might be looking at around £1500 or more for the supply and installation – but they give a more polished look and are often used on period properties or those in a conservation area. If you're considering these types of gutters, make sure you get a few quotes from different roofline companies so you can compare the different materials.

In the past, gutters were made from wood, asbestos concrete or stone. They were often lined with lead to stop the water from seeping through. When it was discovered that asbestos was seriously harmful, it of course stopped being used. Wood was prone to rotting, even with lead lining, and stone is heavy and expensive. So when uPVC came along, it became an affordable and easy material to use for gutters so homeowners could be confident that rainwater will be kept away from the foundations of their properties. It’s important to keep gutters clear from leaves and debris, because if they become blocked, they can make water to fall against your property’s walls, causing damp.
