Aberaeron

Aberaeron is a seaside resort town in Ceredigion, Wales. It is situated between Aberystwyth and Cardigan, and is home to the headquarters of Ceredigion County Council. At the 2001 census, the number of inhabitants was 1422. The town gets its name from the Welsh which means 'mouth of the River Aeron'.

Rev. Alban Thomas Jones Gwynne planned and developed the town in 1805. He built a harbour that worked as a port and supported the shipbuilding industry in the 19th century. A cluster of workmen's houses and a school were also built on the harbour's north side, but these have since been reclaimed by the sea.

Craftspeople lived in Aberaeron even before it became an operating port. In 1830, there were bootmakers, bakers and carpenters to name a few.

Aberaeron has unusual architecture. Edward Haycock constructed it around a principle square of Regency buildings grouped around the harbour. Some of the architecture has featured on British postage stamps.

A noteworthy feature of the borough is Castell Cadwgan. It was a 12th-century ringwork fortification which was by the shore, but the sea has since claimed it. Some remains of the enclosure bank are still visible.
