Bellshill
Bellshill is a town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is positioned ten miles south east of Glasgow city centre and 37 miles west of Edinburgh, in addition to being in close proximity to other towns which include Motherwell, Hamilton and Coatbridge. Since 1996, it has been a part of the Greater Glasgow metropolitan area. With a population of approximately 20,705, a report by the Halifax Building Society suggested that in the spring of 2005, the town was the UK's property hotspot, seeing a rise in house prices by 46 per cent. This resulted in the standard house price as being approximately £105,000. It is believed that the town dates from the seventeenth century, which originally contained a row of quarry workers' houses owned by Mr. Bell, the owner of a stone quarry to the south of the town. The improvement work to Bellshill, however, largely occurred following the quarry shutting at the start of the 19th century. Development work has continued throughout the twentieth century. Most recently, the Streetscape Project, a project which aims to attain the town's renovation and to modernise the the town centre, occurred between 2007 and 2010. This designed a one way system around the main street and made the area more pedestrian-friendly. Since the middle of the 1980s, the town has been recognised particularly for producing respected and influential popular music, with bands which include the Soup Dragons, BMX Bandits and Teenage Fanclub coming from the town. A Channel 4 TV series, 'Sounds of the Suburbs', celebrated the music of the area, often referred to as the 'Bellshill Sound' or the 'Bellshill Beat'.
