Wigton is a market community in Cumbria, England. Historically in Cumberland, it exists just outside the Lake District in the borough of Allerdale. Wigton goes to the centre of the Solway Level, between the Caldbeck Fells as well as the Solway coast. It is served by Wigton railway station on the Cumbrian Coast Line, as well as the A596 roadway to Workington. The town of Silloth-on-Solway lies twelve miles to the west, past Abbeytown. Wigton today is a growing market community, with livestock auctions being held on a regular basis at Hopes Auction Company. The major employer is Innovia Films. The community has its own secondary school, called The Nelson Thomlinson College, which is a well-performing detailed with close links to the Innovia manufacturing facility. In 2004 the town was the first settlement in the UK to enforce a curfew on teens under the age of 16. It was in area for two weeks, and also its goal was to lower the amount of vandalism in the community centre. It followed every night criminal damage campaigns, which included smashed store fronts, along with intimidation of elderly members of the neighborhood. The time limit drew in national interest, with the local senior high school getting gos to from agencies such as Sky News. It had some result, with less vandalism occurring ever since.
