A wall does several points, only one of which is to hold the roof up. Because the 1970s the wall surface's role in maintaining the heat in has ended up being increasingly vital.

Outside wall insulation involves fixing a layer of insulation product to the wall, then covering it with a special type of make (plasterwork) or cladding. The surface can be smooth, textured, colored, tiled, panelled, pebble-dashed, or finished with block slides.

Is External Wall Surface Insulation Worth doing?

There are a number of issues to be resolved before mounting external wall insulation, but the advantages are numerous, including:

  • Minimizing warm loss as well as energy bills
  • Reducing draughts and also enhancing the feeling of convenience
  • It does not disrupt your house while being mounted
  • It does not lower interior flooring area
  • It permits walls to contribute to thermal mass (the 'tea cosy' effect).
  • It boosts weatherproofing as well as sound resistance.
  • It enhances the life of the wall surface.
  • It decreases condensation on inner wall surfaces.

Is Planning Consent Needed for External Wall Insulation?

Whatever else external wall surface insulation does, it will certainly change the outside look of the house. Most of the times that will certainly indicate gaining planning consent before undertaking the job, so do check with your neighborhood authority from the start. For homes in Sanctuary and also for noted structures it is fairly feasible that permission will certainly not be forthcoming.

Under Building Regulations, if 25 per cent or even more of a wall surface is to be protected on the surface, it is commonly essential to bring the whole wall surface approximately present standards-- that makes sense because, if you're going to go to the initiatives as well as expense of insulating on the surface, then you may also do it well. The thermal efficiency of the insulated wall surface needs to have a U value of no greater than 0.30.

Just how much will it set you back?

External wall surface insulation is pricey but effective. Including it as part of a bigger job will minimize the expense, plus it does not need to be done to the whole house; an eye-catching front altitude may be better to internal insulation, while less eye-catching side as well as back elevations can be insulated on the surface. But despite the higher price, the benefits external insulation uses over inner mean that it is tough to neglect.

  • Exterior wall insulation: around ₤ 10,000.

Abercastle

Abercastle is a village in the Welsh speaking area of Pembrokeshire, Wales. It has a working harbour which Abercastle Boat Owners Association cares for. It is an old trading harbour which exported slate, grain, limestone, butter, honey, corn and coal.

Abercastle harbour was the landing site of Alfred Johnson, the first person to make a single handed Atlantic crossing. He landed at Abercastle in August 1876, sixty days after setting off in Gloucester, Massachusetts. A commemorative plaque made of Welsh slate on the quay wall was opened by Johnson's grandson in 2003.

Half a mile west of Abercastle lies Carreg Samson, which is a 5000 year old Neolithic Burial Chamber and the site of over 1000 burials. It has a cap stone 15 feet long and 9 feet wide held up by three upright stones. Locals called it Samson because of a legend that Samson put it in position with his little finger.

The wreck of the Leysian lies on the west side of the harbour, around 50m from the cliffs. It is popular with divers who say that lots of fish live in there. It's also thought that a small shark visits the wreckage.

FAQs

Will external wall insulation stop condensation?

Damp issues on a property are usually generated by a lot of factors such as a poor or broken guttering, condensation and lots more. The question arising here is what is the possibility of External Wall Insulation (EWI) preventing condensation? Not only is EWI a reliable way to reduce condensation-caused damp, but it’s also one of the major reasons property owners in solid wall homes consider thermally rendering or cladding their external walls.

Condensation arises as a result of warm moist internal air hitting a cold surface such as the steaming up of both windows and mirror when having a shower. What happens here is the condensation of the water vapour in the air from a gas to liquid in the process of touching the cold surface - one whose temperature is significantly reduced to reach the dew point. At the dew point, condensation is very rampant, and to tackle this issue you’ll have to heighten the wall temperature in order to convert the moisture to vapour and permit it to pass through the wall. And that’s exactly the job of an external wall insulation!

To get started you must ensure that the walls are clean and dry prior to fitting the external wall insulation. The month of May through to September when the weather tends to be dry and more stable are usually the best period to carry out the project. The external wall insulation will function just like a cosy blanket around the building. Ultimately, changing the feel and temperature of the inside of your home. As a result, the previously cold walls will no longer be cold which goes a long way to mitigate the effects of condensation. Furthermore, when an EWI is installed, the rooms of your home will automatically trap more thermal mass as the heat is saved in the walls’ fabric and released back when the temperature drops.

Are there grants available for external wall insulation?

External wall insulation works to keep your home cosy and comfy while also helping to cut the energy bills. However with the great benefits also comes great costs, so it’s actually a logical decision to know whether there are grants out there which you’re eligible for to help you handle the cost of the external wall insulation.

There are grants available for external wall insulation, but rarely will you find one that covers the full installation cost. With the help of the government’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme, a couple of energy companies assist in making your home more energy efficient by offering grants or free insulation. In certain cases whereby you receive particular state benefits, you may as well qualify for a higher grant that’ll cover more of the insulation cost.

However, if your energy supplier doesn’t offer any grant, you need not worry as you can save as much on energy bill after installation. Here’s what insulation can help you save per year on energy bills:

• Floor insulation can help you save within a range of £30 to £75 each year.

• Cavity wall insulation can help you save about £85 to £280 a year.

• Loft Insulation (270mm) can help you save about £135 to £250 a year.

Generally, the amount you’ll be able to save on your energy bills depends mainly on the type and size of your property, as well as how energy efficient it already is without the insulation. In the long run, your external wall insulation will more than give you back your investment on the valuable project through your savings on energy bills. In other words, whether or not you’re eligible for a grant should never stop you from installing an external wall insulation.

Does external wall insulation add value to your home?

The answer is yes! Houses whose external walls have been insulated are more valuable than their uninsulated counterparts. And not only does it add to the value of a home, but also significantly reduces the amount of electricity consumption. This is a major turn on for potential investors which implies a greater demand and ultimately, a higher price. The real estate market is a very dynamic one which can be hard to predict at any particular time. The frequent changes in price are usually down to factors beyond the owners’ control, but if you’re looking to put up your house for sale in the near future, it would be a wise decision to consider ways in which you can increase its value. While renovating each room can be on the expensive side, a great solution would be insulate the external walls.

An insulated house is one that is well secured against the harmful impact of extremely high or low temperature, humidity and other atmospheric factors. Hence, the reason why a house with external wall insulation has a greater value which you would not want to miss out on. What’s more? You’ll get a great thermal insulation with the top notch materials like foamed polystyrene, high quality renders, mineral wool or polyurethane.

With an external wall insulation, you know the transaction will always be favourable on both ends. You get to smile to the bank, while the buyer also gets to enjoy great value for every penny spent. To employ the services of a reliable external wall insulation expert, simply conduct an in depth research from family and friends, online and other sources. Go through their online reviews and ask questions to become more familiar with the process and its value-adding potentials.

How much does external solid wall insulation cost?

Before the commencement of any project, it’s always best to get an estimation of the cost. However, determining the cost of an external solid wall insulation is not the easiest of tasks as it relies on varying components such as the insulation materials to be used, labour cost and installation as well as the type of decorative finish to be incorporated. And depending on your choice of insulation material, some may need some adhesives while others may require some fixings which also contributes to the differences in price. As a result, the determination of the material cost alone can be tricky and even more so when various materials cover varying areas.

With that in mind, the cost of external solid wall insulation generally ranges between £80 to £100 per square metre2. As a result, a small flat can cost from £6000 to £9000 whereas a large detached house can have a price ranging between £21000 to £23000. To earn back your investment in terms of energy bill savings can take a couple of years, but it’s surely worth the try as there are several other benefits associated with installing an external solid wall insulation system. What’s more? Another huge factor that can influence the cost of your system is also the amount of work that’s required, how easy it is to be accessed by the installers and lots more

If you’re looking to cut down on the cost of your external solid wall insulation, then the best time for an installation might just be when you’re having another decorating or building project done such as fitting a new roof, window painting, installation of solar PV panels and more. This way, you’ll be able to spread the cost and have a greater value for each penny expended.
