Caldicot

Caldicot is a small town and community within Monmouthshire, southeast Wales. The term 'Caldicot' is usually believed to derive from the Old English phrase 'calde cot' which means 'cold hut'. A cold hut is an exposed shelter made use of by either humans or animals. As recorded in population estimates collected in 2014, the town has a population of about 11,500. Among the oldest buildings in Caldicot, Llanthony Secunda Manor was built around 1120 as a grange for monks from Llanthony Secunda Priory in Gloucester. By the middle of the nineteenth century, Caldicot grew into a little farming village. However, the introduction of the South Wales Railway brought London and Cardiff within reasonably easy reach, although Caldicot station wasn't finished till 1936. As a result of the industry which was attracted by the railway, Henry Hughes of Tintern opened a wireworks next to the railway in 1862, which was soon to develop into the village's principal employer and attracted lots of new workers. In 1880, it turned into a tinplate works for the canning industry. A notable landmark within the town is Court House, which was the house of baker Henry Jones, the creator of self-raising flour, from 1864 until his death in 1891. He is buried in the churchyard. Caldicot is also most famously called the location of Caldicot Castle and lake. The area has well-liked footpaths along the Caldicot Levels and the coastal path may be walked. Nearby tourist attractions are Caerwent and Wentwood. Towards the north west, Dewstow House dates from about 1804. Substantial gardens and grottoes built after 1895 have been undergoing renovation since 2000 and are now open to the public. For all of your home upgrades, make certain that you pick reliable pros in Caldicot to make sure that you get a fantastic quality service.

FAQs

what kind of paint to use on exterior brick?

What Kind Of Paint To Use On Exterior Brick?

If you’re thinking about painting your exterior brick, you’d probably be wondering the kind of paint that’ll be most suitable for the project. If yes, you’re definitely not alone! Bricks are widely known for being notoriously difficult to paint due to their porousness and can also absorb paint. However, if you’re able to purchase the right type of paint and carefully prepare for your home’s brick exterior, you can make the process a whole lot more easier and cleaner while also giving your home a lot more updated look. It’s usually cheap, appealing and even protects your bricks from the elements which makes it even more durable.

The best type of paint to purchase is the elastomeric paint which provides the highest level of longevity. It’s actually more expensive than acrylic paint but it clearly outworks 100% acrylic paint by double in terms of both effectiveness and efficiency. The elastomeric paint is also super resistant to cold, heat as well as sunlight which makes it perfect for outdoor application. What’s more? It’s also dense enough to fill in cracks in the bricks but in such cases you might need to apply two coats. Overall, if you happen to stay in an inclement weather prone region, an elastomeric paint will help protect your home’s brick surface.

However, if you’re on a tight budget you can also consider getting an acrylic latex paint. This is a lot cheaper than elastomeric paint, but it’s also a great painting option for exterior bricks as it permits moisture to leave the bricks’ surface and helps to prevent mildew. Furthermore, you’ll only need to apply just a coat of acrylic paint.

how to remove old exterior paint?

How To Remove Old Exterior Paint

When the paint of your house is starting to peel, there’s the need to take a swift action. While some homeowners opt to cover it with vinyl siding or replace it with fibre cement siding, there’s no reason why you would want to hide the exterior of your house if it still looks great. When you don’t want to hide the beauty of your exterior, the only other option you’ve got is stripping or removing of the old paint. So how do you remove old exterior paint without much hassle? Let’s take a look!

✓ Propane blowtorch. Due to its affordability and effectiveness, this blowtorch has been one of the most popular means of removing old exterior paint amongst homeowners for quite some time. It makes use of high heat to soften the acrylic-latex paint which makes it easy to peel off with a putty knife. However, it can also be very risky to use as it’s always a dangerous game when it comes to open flames. What’s more? Applying an open flame to lead-based paint may release toxic lead fumes, therefore you’d have to be very careful if you wish to use this method.

✓ Electric sanders. Belt sanders are a great option to removing old exterior paint as they’re able to strip off the paint quickly. However, this must be done gently and carefully as you’d risk gouging the wood if you lay into the sander too hard. The problem with this method is also lead-based paint as the sander tends to convert everything to dust and direct them straight to your face, hair and lungs.

✓ Scrapping. This involves using a sharp, rigid putty knife or blade designed for painting scraping to strip the exterior paint. This method also involves dust but you’d have a better control over it than the sander.

How should I prepare for exterior painting and decorating?

Exterior painters and decorators will prepare the areas to be painted for you. This will involve washing and cleaning the area and making sure that it’s a good quality surface. Cracks or holes should be filled in. In some cases, you may wish to have rendering redone before the painting is done.

What’s the best time of year to carry out exterior painting and decorating?

Most companies will recommend that exterior painting and decorating is carried out in the summer months. However, advances in paint technology mean that some paints can be applied in low temperatures and even when it’s raining. Check the can for the best conditions in which to apply or ask a professionals advise.
