Dunbeath

Dunbeath is a town in south-east Caithness, Scotland on the A9 road. It was the birth place of Neil M. Gunn (1891-1973), author of The Silver Darlings, Highland River etc., many of whose books are embeded in Dunbeath and its Strath. Dunbeath has an extremely abundant historical landscape, the website of numerous Iron Age brochs and also a very early medieval monastic site (see Alex Morrison's archaeological survey, "Dunbeath: A Cultural Landscape".) Of Dunbeath's landscape, Gunn created: "These tiny straths, like the Strath of Dunbeath, have this intimate appeal. In boyhood we are familiar with every square lawn of it. We encompass it physically and our memories hold it. Birches, hazel trees for nutting, pools with trout as well as an occasionally visible salmon, river-flats with the wind on the bracken and also going away bunny scuts, a wealth of wild blossom as well as little bird life, the rising hawk, the unanticipated roe, the ancient graveyard, thoughts of the folk who when lived far inland in straths and also hollows, the past as well as the here and now held in a minute of day-dream." ('My Little Bit Of Britain', 1941.). There is a neighborhood museum/landscape analysis centre at the old village college.

    FAQs

How does the A-G gas boiler rating system work?

The A-G scale refers to the energy efficiency of your boiler. G-rated boilers are the least efficient, and give you less heat and hot water for your money. Installing an A-rated boiler will reduce your energy bills and carbon emissions. Don't compromise on cheaper, lower rated boilers, you will save yourself more money longer term with an A-rated model.

    How do I re-pressurise a boiler?

Re-pressurising your boiler means that you allow more water to enter system via the filling loop. It can be easy to re-pressurise your boiler yourself. Always check your manual, but there are some simple steps you can take to restore pressure to your boiler:

    • Switch off your boiler and let it cool completely

    • Make sure both ends of your filling loop are attached

    • Open both valves to allow cold water into the system – you’ll hear it start to move

    • Look out for your pressure gauge to show 1.5 bar

    • Close both valves

    • Switch your boiler back on

    • Undo both ends of your filling loop and remove it. Remember some water might come out, so be ready to catch some spillage!

What size boiler do I need?

The size of boiler you need will depend on the size of your home, how many radiators and bathrooms you have and how many people live there. The boiler size refers to its output, which is measured in kilowatts (kW), rather than the actual dimensions. Speak to your boiler engineer about which boiler is suitable for you, as if you have more than one bathroom or a lot of people in your home a combi boiler might not suit you. Other boiler types such as system boilers or conventional boilers may be better suited to larger homes because they have bigger outputs.

How long does a boiler last?

If you get the right size boiler for your home and you get it serviced regularly, your boiler could last up to 15 years. It may even last longer than this, but you’ll find that your boiler begins to become less efficient as it gets older. Also, as technology improves, a boiler older than 15 years may not be the most efficient one on the market.
