It was formerly in Suffolk Coastal District. The area electoral ward also has the name Saxmundham. Its population at the 2011 census was 4,913. The community's name purportedly stems from the Old English "Seizmond's House". The earliest recorded mention of Saxmundham remains in the Domesday Book of 1086 which states 3 churches. It has had a market charter since at the very least 1272 as well as continues the practice to now.
