The town of Newport Pagnell lies in the English county of Buckinghamshire. The earliest citation of the town on record can be seen in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Neuport', which is Old English for 'New Market Town'. A comment of 'Pagnell' in the town's name is found in records after the manor came to be the home of the Pagnell family. Previously one of Buckingham's largest towns, with the assize courts often being held there, the growth of Milton Keynes had a rather negative impact on the town that was known for providing two medical facilities and providing 6 fairs throughout the year for its inhabitants. Tickford Bridge, set over the River Ouzel, is notable for its status as the earliest iron bridge worldwide remaining to endure consistent use. A plaque by the footbridge at the side of the bridge presents the details of its history and construction, which was placed there by Newport Pagnell Historical Society. According to the 2001 Census, the town has a permanent population of around 15020, which, although increasing considerably from the 6000 residents documented in the 1971 Census, the Borough Council forecasts will stay largely the same for the foreseeable future. Many sports activities can be taken part in and observed in the town. The Newport Pagnell Town F.C., referred to as the Swans, is the town's non-league football team who play at The Pavilion on Willen Road. An ITF Taekwon-Do club, Kicks Taekwon-Do Academy, train at Cedars Primary School, and there is a swimming pool. Newport Pagnell is particularly well-known for its service facility, which was totally modernised in 2012. While resin bound and resin bonded driveways have similar names, it might surprise you to know that they’re very different. Both paving systems use resin and aggregates (stones) to form a fixed surface, but there are plenty more differences than there are similarities.
Resin bound driveways are made from a resin and aggregate mix that is trowelled onto a bitmac or concrete base. It leaves a smooth, flat finish and you won’t find any loose gravel. It’s also a pourous surface, which means that rainwater can pass through into the ground, avoiding pools and flooding.
However, resin bonded driveways involve spreading resin across a base, then scattering aggregate into it. Most of the stones will stick to the resin, but some will stay loose. That means you’ll get the effect of loose gravel without so much to sweep and take care of. Because the stones are scattered onto a complete layer of resin, water can’t pass through it. That means you could end up with water pooling, and it also means that a resin bonded driveway isn’t frost resistant, meaning it could get slippery.
So which is better – a resin bound or resin bonded driveway? The answer depends on a few things. If you have a period property where a smooth, shiny surface might not complement the look of your home, you might want to go for resin bonded. If you need lots of grip, for example if you’re a wheelchair user, resin bonded may also be the way to go – even though resin bound surfaces still offer enough grip for sloped driveways and ramps. But if you want a low-maintenance, weed-free, permeable surface, resin bound driveways are the way to go.
The best way to clean resin bound driveways is to sweep it regularly with a stiff broom. This will remove any debris and prevent moss from growing. It's a good idea to jet wash it after sweeping, because this will get rid of any smaller parts that a broom might not collect.
When you jet wash or power wash your resin bound driveway, make sure the pressure isn’t too high. It’s recommended to keep the pressure less than 150bar, as anything too strong could damage the surface. Make sure the water is cool, but not cold – both hot and cold water can damage the resin. Make sure the jet wash nozzle is at least 20cm from the surface. Any closer and this could damage your driveway. Use a sweeping back and forth motion to clean.
If you treat the area before you have your resin bound driveway installed, you shouldn’t get any weed growth. But if you get any moss or algae appear, you can apply a moss and algae killer that should remove and prevent any regrowth. If you have ingrained algae, you can remove it with a strong bleach solution; make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions. This should also help restore the driveway’s original colour. Make sure you rinse your driveway thoroughly with clean water after using bleach on it to prevent any harm to wildlife or plants.
If you get chewing gum on your resin bound driveway and you can’t get it off with a pressure washer, try using a freezing spray on it first. Then use a wall scraper to gently remove it – never dig under the chewing gum as this could damage the resin on your driveway.
