The London Borough of Southwark in south London, England forms a part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames to the City of London. It was created in 1965 when 3 smaller council places amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. This included the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, and the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey. All districts of the area are inside the London postal district.
The borough covers a total area of around 11.14 square miles. To the south are the London Boroughs of Bromley and Croydon. Based on population estimates created in the middle of 2014, Southwark has a permanent population of about 302538 individuals.
The borough is home to a number of cultural, historical and notable attractions. The Shard, Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and Borough Market which are the biggest of the venues in Southwark to draw domestic and international tourism. Dulwich hosts the Dulwich Picture Gallery as well as the Imperial War Museum in Elephant and Castle.
