Ambleside
Ambleside is a town in Cumbria, in North West England. Historically in Westmorland, it is located at the head of Windermere, England's biggest natural lake. The town is within the Lake District National Forest. Ambleside is provided by South Lakeland District Council and also forms part of the Lakes civil parish however from 1894 to 1935 it was a separate city area council. Ferryboats (still called "cleaners", although now diesel powered) run to Bowness-on-Windermere as well as Lakeside supplying fine views of the lake and surrounding hills. Ambleside is a base for treking, alpinism and hill cycling. It has a variety of hotels, bed and breakfast, pubs as well as dining establishments along with stores. In particular, there are a number of stores selling devices for walkers and also mountain climbers in the community. Ambleside is a prominent starting point for the Fairfield horseshoe, a hillwalking ridge walk. Ambleside is also home to the head office of Brathay Exploration Group, a young people charity based simply past Clappersgate when driving to Hawkshead. The cd CSI: Ambleside, by Birkenhead-based band Fifty percent Guy Half Biscuit, is named after the community.
