Bellshill

Bellshill is a town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It's situated 10 miles to the south east of Glasgow city centre and 37 miles to the west of Edinburgh, in addition to being in close proximity to other towns which include Motherwell, Hamilton and Coatbridge. Since 1996, it's been a part of the Greater Glasgow metropolitan area. With a population of approximately 20,705, a report by the Halifax Building Society indicated that early in 2005, the town was the UK's property hot spot, seeing a rise in property prices by 46 per cent. This led to the standard property price as being £105,698. It's believed that the town dates from the 17th century, which originally contained a row of quarry workers' homes owned by Mr. Bell, the owner of a stone quarry in the south of the town. The development of Bellshill, however, largely came about just after the quarry closing at the start of the 19th century. Developments have continued all through the 20th century. Most recently, the Streetscape Project, a programme aiming to achieve the town's regeneration and modernisation of the town centre, took place between 2007 and 2010. This developed a one way system around the main street making the area a lot more friendly for pedestrians. Since the middle of the 1980s, the town has been recognised particularly for producing respected and influential popular music, with bands which include the Soup Dragons, BMX Bandits and Teenage Fanclub coming from the town. A Channel 4 television series, 'Sounds of the Suburbs', celebrated the music of the area, often referred to as the 'Bellshill Sound' or the 'Bellshill Beat'.
