Barnard Castle
Barnard Castle is a market town in Teesdale, Region Durham, England. It is called after the castle around which it was built. It is the major negotiation in the Teesdale location, and also is a popular visitor location. The Bowes Museum has the best collection of European penalty as well as attractive arts in the North of England, housed in a splendid 19th-century French-style estate. Its most popular exhibition is the 18th-century Silver Swan automaton, though art consists of work by Goya and El Greco. Barnard Castle remains on the north bank of the River Tees, contrary Startforth as well as 21 miles (34 kilometres) south-west of the county town of Durham. Nearby communities include Bishop Auckland to the north-east, Darlington to the east and Richmond in North Yorkshire to the south-east. Barnard Castle's largest single company is GlaxoSmithKline which has a production facility on the borders of town. Barnard Castle is for all purposes (historic, ritualistic and management) located in County Durham. The area border with the North Riding of Yorkshire was adjusted in 1967: that part of the community of Barnard Castle historically in Yorkshire was contributed to County Durham. Barnard Castle was the administrative centre of the former Teesdale area of County Durham up until its abolition on 1 April 2009. The town is currently administered by Durham County Council Unitary Authority, as major authority and also by Barnard Castle Town Council, as a parish. The Community Council chooses a ceremonial Town Mayor every year. It belongs to the Bishop Auckland legislative constituency, which since 2017 is stood for in parliament by Helen Goodman of Labour, though with a small majority over the Conservatives. It remains in the North East England region, which works as a constituency for the European Parliament. Between 1894 and 1967 the community was administratively part of Barnard Castle Urban District.
