Oakham
Oakham is an old English market town in Rutland in the East Midlands of England. It lies to the west of Rutland Water, which is one of the biggest man-made lakes in Europe. It is home to All Saints' Church, founded in the 14th Century, and Oakham Castle, which dates back to the 12th Century. Only the great hall of the castle is still standing, and it is a famous tourist attraction in the town.
Every Wednesday and Saturday in Oakham there is a market where a range of local goods are on sale. Every third Saturday there is a farmer's market on Gaol Street, where local farmers sell their products.
An interesting landmark in Oakham is the Oakham Signal Box, which Airfix used as a mould for all their model rail sets. Another custom that the town has is displaying horseshoes in the great hall of the castle. Whenever a member of royalty or peer of the realm passed through Oakham, they had to pay a penalty in the form of a horseshoe. The horseshoes hang upside-down which is generally seen to be unlucky, but in Oakham this was to stop the Devil from sitting in the hollow.
