Grantown-on-Spey is a town in the Highland Council Area, traditionally within the area of Moray. It was founded in 1765 as a planned settlement on a reduced plateau at Freuchie close to the river Spey at the north side of the Cairngorm mountains, concerning 20 miles (32 kilometres) south-east of Inverness (35 miles or 56 kilometres by roadway).
