St Columb
St Columb Major is a town and civil parish in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. Often described locally as St Columb, it is about 7 miles (11 kilometres) southwest of Wadebridge and 6 miles (10 km) eastern of Newquay. The designation Major differentiates it from the nearby settlement as well as parish of St Columb Minor on the coast. An electoral ward just called St Columb exists with a population at the 2011 census of 5,050. Twice a year the town plays host to "tossing", a medieval game when common throughout Cornwall and now just played in St Columb and St Ives. It is used Shrove Tuesday and after that again on the Saturday eleven days later on. The video game entails 2 groups of several hundred individuals (the 'townsmen' as well as the 'compatriots') that endeavour to lug a silver ball made of apple timber to goals set 2 miles (3 kilometres) apart, making the parish, around 25 square miles (65 km2) in location, the de facto biggest sports ground in the world.
