Hayling Island

Hayling Island is an island just off the south coast of England. It is in the borough of Havant in the English county of Hampshire. Being surrounded by sea all around the island, there is a road bridge to connect the northern end of the island to England at Langstone. Traditionally, a modest foot-passenger ferryboat worked to link it to the Eastney area of the Portsmouth, although it stopped operating in March 2015 till July 2016, being taken over by a new specialist. From the 11th century, salt production ended up being the principal business of the island, recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 and it continued up until the late 19th century. St. Peter's Church, the oldest church to exist on the island, provides a significant amount of history in just one place. With its building and construction beginning around 1140 by the monks of Jumieges from Normandy, development continued throughout the centuries. The three bells assembled in around 1350 are presumed to have among the oldest peals in England. The churchyard is home to a yew tree believed to be the country's oldest yew. Measurements indicate that it is at least over a thousand years old. The opportunities for socialising and leisure are similarly plentiful on the island. Hayling United F.C. is the island's non-League football club, playing regularly at Hayling Park. In the summer of 2010, Hayling Island Sailing Club hosted the 2010 World Laser Standard Senior and Junior Championships, and Hayling is home to among the rare active Real Tennis courts in the UK. Developed in 1911, Seacourt Tennis club is among a handful where every recognised racquet sport can be played. For all your home upgrades, make certain to make use of trusted contractors in Hayling Island to make certain of quality.

    FAQs

What materials do patios come in?

Patios can be made from brick, natural stone or paving stones or slabs. These materials come in a huge range of colours, sizes and effects, so your patio can perfectly complement your garden space. Have a look for yourself or get a paver in to show you and bring samples.

How to resurface a painted concrete patio?

A big benefit to concrete is that you can paint it, making it easy to customise and coordinate with your outside area. However, it’s easy to resurface it too, so if you change your mind or inherit a patio that’s the wrong colour, you don’t need to worry.

Start by cleaning the surface with water and a brush. If you come up against any tough stains, you might need to use a detergent and water mix to remove them. Then you can prepare your resurfacer.

Generally, it’s best to apply resurfacer to a moist surface, although make sure you follow the instructions on the specific product you buy. You’ll need to mix the resurfacer with water, then pour and spread it on with a trowel or brush. You might need to apply multiple coats, and can add texture if you want to make the surface more grippy.

Ensure you protect any expansion joints in your patio with duct tape or weather stripping to stop the resurfacer from filling them in. You can also add a colour agent to your resurfacer before you apply it if you’d like to customise the colour.

    How to concrete a driveway?

Whether you’re going to hire a professional to create your concrete driveway or are trying DIY, it’s a good idea to know how to create one.

Firstly, make sure you’ve thought carefully about the size and location of your driveway, and mark it out with pegs and string. Then, you’ll need to dig out the area. Ideally this should be about 20cm deep – 10cm for the subbase and 10cm for the concrete layer. Make sure this is level and compress both the soil and the subbase with a compactor if needed.

Then, you’ll need to assemble the formwork for your driveway. These are pegged out planks of wood or metal that support the edges of your driveway while it’s setting. If your driveway is more than 4 metres long, you’ll also need to create control joints to allow the concrete to settle without cracking.

Once you’ve done this, you’re ready to pour on the concrete. You’ll need to level it and ideally give it some texture so the surface has some grip. Cover your concrete driveway with plastic sheeting when you’re happy with the finish and leave it to set. Make sure you don’t walk or drive on it until it’s completely set – this usually takes 3-10 days. Then, you can remove the framework and enjoy your new driveway.

My garden is sloped, can I install a patio?

Patios are suitable for many gardens. If you do not have a flat area already, consider having some landscaping work done to create one. If your garden is on a very extreme slope, you could have a multi-layered (terraced) patio with steps between each layer. Ask for advice and get quotes if you're not sure.
