Broughton-in-furness

Broughton-in-Furness is a little market town around the southern border of England's Lake District National Park. It's situated in the Furness region of Cumbria, which was part of Lancashire just before 1974. It is near the River Duddon, just inland from the coastal hamlet of Foxfield. Broughton is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as on the list of townships forming the Manor of Hougun which was held by Tostig Godwinson, Earl of Northumbria. Dating from about the eleventh century, the original settlement grew to be the local market town for both fishing and agriculture, and now holds a frequent farmers cattle market. The central obelisk in the town square was built to mark the Jubilee of King George III in 1810. In 1859, the Coniston branch of the Furness Railway, which passed through the town, was opened. Nearly one hundred years later, in 1958, the line was closed down and dismantled, and the cleared ground now serves as a public bridleway. The nearest railway station to Broughton is now Foxfield railway station, 2 miles (3.2 km) south west of the town. The creation of the National Park during the 1950s attracted some tourism to Brougton-in-Furness, even though many vacationers still head further north or east towards the central lakes. In the 1990s, the A595 road was diverted in an attempt to boost the atmosphere of the town and retain its rural charm. The town consists of, amongst other shops, a Post Office, a newsagents, a grocer, a butcher, a bakery along with a selection of pubs and restaurants. There's a Tourist Information Centre located in the main square. For all your property improvement tasks, make certain that you select reputable pros in Broughton-in-Furness to ensure you get the best quality service.

    FAQs

My garden is sloped, can I install a patio?

Patios are suitable for many gardens. If you do not have a flat area already, consider having some landscaping work done to create one. If your garden is on a very extreme slope, you could have a multi-layered (terraced) patio with steps between each layer. Ask for advice and get quotes if you're not sure.

How to resurface a painted concrete patio?

A big benefit to concrete is that you can paint it, making it easy to customise and coordinate with your outside area. However, it’s easy to resurface it too, so if you change your mind or inherit a patio that’s the wrong colour, you don’t need to worry.

Start by cleaning the surface with water and a brush. If you come up against any tough stains, you might need to use a detergent and water mix to remove them. Then you can prepare your resurfacer.

Generally, it’s best to apply resurfacer to a moist surface, although make sure you follow the instructions on the specific product you buy. You’ll need to mix the resurfacer with water, then pour and spread it on with a trowel or brush. You might need to apply multiple coats, and can add texture if you want to make the surface more grippy.

Ensure you protect any expansion joints in your patio with duct tape or weather stripping to stop the resurfacer from filling them in. You can also add a colour agent to your resurfacer before you apply it if you’d like to customise the colour.

What materials do patios come in?

Patios can be made from brick, natural stone or paving stones or slabs. These materials come in a huge range of colours, sizes and effects, so your patio can perfectly complement your garden space. Have a look for yourself or get a paver in to show you and bring samples.

How to seal cracks in a concrete driveway?

Cracks on your concrete driveway can look scruffy and unsightly. They can also lead to further damage, as moisture can get into the cracks and make them worse. So, it’s important to seal the cracks as soon as you can.

Start by cleaning the area and removing any loose materials. This will help any new materials you introduce to bond with your existing driveway. Then use concrete caulking or sealer to fill in the cracks. You’ll need to use a trowel to push the filler firmly into the crack.

Once you’ve filled in the crack, make sure you consult the product instructions and leave it for the amount of time specified before using your concrete driveway again.
