Boncath

Boncath is a village, community and postal district in north Pembrokeshire, Wales. It's positioned about 5 miles (8 kilometres) to the west of Newcastle Emlyn. The village stands at a crossroad linking the nearby settlements of Newchapel (Capelnewydd), Eglwyswrw, Blaenffos and Bwlchygroes. Initially a hamlet around an inn, the village grew after the introduction of the railway in 1885. Boncath railway station, which opened in September 1886, was a two-platform stop on the line in between Crymmych Arms and Kilgerran Halt on the Whitland and Cardigan Railway, known as 'Cardi Bach'. The line was shut because of the 1963 Beeching Axe and the station building was altered into a private house. The village once included three tailors, a cobbler plus a dressmaker, and in 2000 a brand new Community Hall was completed. Cilwendeg House, described as one of the most significant mansions in Pembrokeshire, dates from the late eighteenth century and was built on the site of a former home which dates back to the 1600s. One of the features of the property is the Grade 2 listed Shell House, constructed in the late 1820s. The 21 bedroom mansion was a care home between 1952 and 2010. Now, the village has a resident population of 700 residents. The town is served by a regular bus service. The Boncath Inn stands at the heart of the village along with a village shop and Post Office, as well as a variety of smaller businesses. The Welsh Independent Chapel at Fachendre (Fach-hendre), established in 1879, can be discovered towards the south east of the village and is a listed building. The Community Hall, a registered charity, provides a space that can be used for events in the area. Cilwendeg hosted the 2013 Urdd Eisteddfod. For all your home upgrades, make sure that you use vetted specialists in Boncath to make sure you get the best quality service.

    FAQs

    How to concrete a driveway?

Whether you’re going to hire a professional to create your concrete driveway or are trying DIY, it’s a good idea to know how to create one.

Firstly, make sure you’ve thought carefully about the size and location of your driveway, and mark it out with pegs and string. Then, you’ll need to dig out the area. Ideally this should be about 20cm deep – 10cm for the subbase and 10cm for the concrete layer. Make sure this is level and compress both the soil and the subbase with a compactor if needed.

Then, you’ll need to assemble the formwork for your driveway. These are pegged out planks of wood or metal that support the edges of your driveway while it’s setting. If your driveway is more than 4 metres long, you’ll also need to create control joints to allow the concrete to settle without cracking.

Once you’ve done this, you’re ready to pour on the concrete. You’ll need to level it and ideally give it some texture so the surface has some grip. Cover your concrete driveway with plastic sheeting when you’re happy with the finish and leave it to set. Make sure you don’t walk or drive on it until it’s completely set – this usually takes 3-10 days. Then, you can remove the framework and enjoy your new driveway.

Do I need to seal my concrete driveway?

Sealing your driveway isn’t 100% necessary, but it is recommended. It will help keep your driveway in good condition and increase how long it lasts. Sealer should be applied approximately once every 2 years, or when your driveway begins to show signs of deterioration.

How to resurface a painted concrete patio?

A big benefit to concrete is that you can paint it, making it easy to customise and coordinate with your outside area. However, it’s easy to resurface it too, so if you change your mind or inherit a patio that’s the wrong colour, you don’t need to worry.

Start by cleaning the surface with water and a brush. If you come up against any tough stains, you might need to use a detergent and water mix to remove them. Then you can prepare your resurfacer.

Generally, it’s best to apply resurfacer to a moist surface, although make sure you follow the instructions on the specific product you buy. You’ll need to mix the resurfacer with water, then pour and spread it on with a trowel or brush. You might need to apply multiple coats, and can add texture if you want to make the surface more grippy.

Ensure you protect any expansion joints in your patio with duct tape or weather stripping to stop the resurfacer from filling them in. You can also add a colour agent to your resurfacer before you apply it if you’d like to customise the colour.

What materials do patios come in?

Patios can be made from brick, natural stone or paving stones or slabs. These materials come in a huge range of colours, sizes and effects, so your patio can perfectly complement your garden space. Have a look for yourself or get a paver in to show you and bring samples.
