Carluke is a town situated in the centre of the Lanarkshire countryside in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is 4.7 miles northwest of Lanark and 4.2 miles southeast of Wishaw, sitting on a high plateau overseeing the River Clyde, directly in the middle of Lanarkshire's fruit growing area. In line with a population survey in 2008, it has a permanent population of around 19500, which makes it the Clyde Valley's most populated town. Carluke's expansion began most rapidly during the time of the industrial revolution, with corn milling, cotton weaving, coal mining plus the manufacture of bricks, glass, confectionary and jam becoming the town's most substantial industries. Now, Carluke is predominantly a commuting town. The town is served by dual carriageways connecting it to the M8 and M74, and additionally, it benefits from regular trains to Lanark, Motherwell, Hamilton, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Despite this, you'll find several significant employers based in the town. Resulting from Carluke's proximity to Clyde Valley's main fruit growers, the jam company, Renshaw Scott, is a significant employer, which developed further by recently adding a chocolate refinery to their plant. Main redevelopment works have been completed in the town since the beginning of the 21st century. There is certainly a sizeable variety of independent retailers and supermarkets in the vibrant and newly regenerated town centre, with residents of neighbouring villages, for example Braidwood, Forth, Kilncadzow and Law, making use of the wide selection of shops and services that may be found in Carluke. In 2010, a '1.1 million indoor soft play and cafe', 'The Bubbles Factory', was constructed, which was voted 'The best Play in the UK'.
