The London Borough of Hounslow is a London borough in west London, England, forming part of Outer London. The borough was formed in 1965, under the London Government Act 1963, by the merger of the area of the former Brentford and Chiswick Urban District, Feltham Urban District along with the Heston and Isleworth Urban District of Middlesex. Hounslow covers a total area of about 21.61 square miles. The borough stretches from near Central London in the east towards the border with Surrey towards the west, covering Chiswick, Brentford, Isleworth and Feltham as well as Hounslow itself.
In line with population estimates from the middle of 2014, the borough features a permanent population of around 265568 people today.
The Great West Road, which crosses the borough from Chiswick to Heathrow, once served nationally and globally popular manufacturers like Firestone, Gillette and Coty. As a result, the area became known as the 'Golden Mile'. A number of of these factory sites remain, including Gillette Corner, and also the Great West Road is still residence to many prestigious names, providing them with straightforward non-motorway access between Slough, London Heathrow Airport and Central London. Other notable landmarks include Osterley Park, Gunnersbury Park, Syon House, the London Museum of Water and Steam, and Chiswick House.
