The royal family attend the meeting, arriving every day inside a horse-drawn carriage, and it continues to be a major event within the British social calendar. Several of the amenities are connected to the racecourse, but there's a variety of shops in the wide High Street. These consist of a supermarket, petrol station and lots of cafes. Most of the buildings are dated from the immediate post-war period with flats above the ground floor retail space. Heatherwood Hospital, the filming location for 'Carry on Matron', was at the western edge of the town. Ascot boasts a station on a bi-section of the railway line from London's Waterloo station to Reading, Bagshot, Aldershot and Guildford, initially built by the London and South Western Railway and now run by South West Trains. Because of the efficient and frequent service on this line, Ascot has developed into a commuter centre with its residents travelling westwards to Reading and eastwards to London.
