The London Borough of Southwark in south London, England forms a part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames to the City of London. It was established in 1965 when three smaller sized council places amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. This integrated the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, plus the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey. It's governed by Southwark London Borough Council.
The borough covers an overall area of about 11.14 square miles. To the south are the London Boroughs of Bromley and Croydon. In line with population estimates made in the middle of 2014, Southwark includes a permanent population of about 302538 individuals.
The borough is home to a variety of cultural, historical and notable attractions. The Shard, Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and Borough Market which are the biggest of the venues in Southwark to draw domestic and international tourism. Dulwich houses the Dulwich Picture Gallery as well as the Imperial War Museum in Elephant and Castle.
