Honiton

Honiton is a market town and civil parish in East Devon. It is positioned next to the River Otter, and is approximately 17 miles (27 km) north east of Exeter in the county of Devon. Honiton is at the junction of the A35, the A30 and the A373 roads. Honiton train station is on the West of England Main Line that runs from London Waterloo to Exeter. Honiton has a population approximated at 11822. The town grew along the line of the Fosse Way, the ancient Roman roadway linking Exeter to Lincoln, on which it was an important stopping point. The site is spoken about in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Honetone, meaning 'Huna's tun' or 'farmstead'. In the 17th century, great numbers of people produced lace by hand in their homes, and later in the 19th century, Queen Victoria had her bridal gown crafted from Honiton lace, though the gown itself was made in the fishing village of Beer. The town also came to be known for its pottery. Honiton is host to the yearly Honiton Agricultural Show, a traditional gathering dating back to 1890. The Hot Pennies ceremony takes place yearly on the very first Tuesday after 19 July in the High Street of the town, and dates back to the reign of King Stephen. The event has its roots in the practice of the landed gentry taking enjoyment in tossing hot pennies from windows to regional peasants, a seemingly philanthropic gesture resulting in burns. The custom also had the intention of motivating people to take a trip to the town from the surrounding region to go to a subsequent fair. Is asbestos dangerous?

Asbestos is very dangerous if inhaled. It can cause a variety of lung-related diseases. Asbestos will generally not be released into the air unless it is disturbed. You should be very careful if you suspect there may be asbestos in your home and have a survey carried out to check that it is not being released into the air.

what is asbestos?

Asbestos is basically a naturally occurring fibre which, until the 1990s, has been a commonly used material in construction and other industries. There are three major kinds of asbestos fibres in the UK and they include crocidolite or blue, amosite or brown as well as chrysotile or white.

Before it’s life threatening potentials were exposed, asbestos was commonly used across the globe in buildings and structures as a means of insulation, roofing, flooring and was also sprayed on ceiling as well as walls. Upon the discovery of its hazardous features however, it has been swiftly banned in the UK but it may still be discovered in buildings and structures that have been erected before the year 2000.

In the event whereby a building or structure possesses asbestos within them, it can pose only a little risk but only if they remain undisturbed. It’s only when they’re disturbed or damaged that the tiny asbestos fibres are usually discharged into the air and can be easily inhaled into the lungs. Breathing in of asbestos is a very harmful thing as the fibres can have a terrible impact on your lungs and their linings. What’s more? Asbestos-related health conditions’ symptoms normally takes several years to surface which means that an exposure to the deadly substance many years ago may only start to show symptoms today. Therefore, if you’ve worked in a building or construction industry especially within the time period of 1970s to 1990s, there is a real chance that you’ve been exposed to asbestos. This type of jobs include ship building, construction and insulation projects, but this doesn’t necessarily imply that asbestos exposure can not occur in other jobs as well.

Do I need an asbestos survey to sell my house?

There is no legal requirement to have an asbestos survey done to sell your house. However, some mortgage lenders, estate agents and insurance companies may require one. Many home buyers and/or valuers will want to know before submitting an offer for your property.

Does a house survey check for asbestos?

A typical Homebuyer Report or Building Survey Report doesn’t usually involve checking for asbestos. Your surveyor may let you know that there are certain parts of the property that are likely to contain asbestos, but they won’t do any testing. This means that, if you want to be sure about whether a property contains asbestos, you need to get an asbestos survey.
