The London Borough of Southwark in south London, England forms a part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames towards the City of London. It was created in 1965 when three smaller sized council places amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. This integrated the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, along with the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey. All districts of the area are inside the London postal district.
The borough covers a total area of around 11.14 square miles. To the south are the London Boroughs of Bromley and Croydon. In line with population estimates produced in the middle of 2014, Southwark includes a permanent population of about 302538 people.
The borough is home to many cultural, historical and notable attractions. The Shard, Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and Borough Market which are the biggest of the venues in Southwark to draw domestic and international tourism. Dulwich houses the Dulwich Picture Gallery along with the Imperial War Museum in Elephant and Castle.
