Artificial Grass in Johnstone

Artificial grass is an alternative solution to a natural lawn. It demands very little maintenance since you will not need to mow it or handle mud during the winter. Today, artificial grass is comprised of fibres and infills of a mixture of sand and granules of recycled rubber. They have typically been made use of in commercial conditions, but they are becoming increasingly well known in people’s houses. It is possible to lay artificial grass on virtually any surface, irrespective of whether it is flat or sloping. It is safe for young children and pets, and it also drains like genuine grass so you won’t end up with puddles. It’s environmentally friendly as you will not have to water it and there is no reason to treat it with pesticides or feeds. You should get as much as 20 years out of your artificial grass without any maintenance and hassle. It won’t fade or flatten with time, and it'll retain its colour right until the end of its life. If you need a local pro to lay artificial grass for you, just fill out the form and we’ll place you in touch with up to four contractors who will provide you with a free, no obligation quote.

Johnstone

Johnstone is a town in the council area and county of Renfrewshire in the west central Lowlands of Scotland. It is located 3 miles west of Paisley, 12 miles west of the centre of the city of Glasgow and 12 miles north east of Kilwinning. Forming a section of the biggest conurbation in Scotland, Johnstone rests on the western border of the Greater Glasgow Urban Area. Johnstone was a planned neighborhood, which built around the house of Easter Cochrane, now referred to as Johnstone Castle. Building began in 1782 when the Laird George Houston validated concepts for a variety of residential seats forming the town centre. The building of two identical civic squares, Houstoun Square and Ludovic Square, and the town got its parish church by 1794. Coal mining started to bring wealth to Johnstone in the 19th century, with the population increasing to 5600 in 1831. Such a development in population meant the boost in slum conditions till the development of an area of the town to incorporate a sizeable quantity of purpose-built residential estates, taking place in the 1930s. Much of Johnstone's history preceding industrialisation has disappeared, with Johnstone Castle ending up being derelict after the last Laird passed away in 1931. The town's population of 15687 is well-connected to the rest of Scotland because of its distance to efficient transport links. A dual carriageway connects Johnstone to the M8 motorway for transport connections to central Scotland, and the town includes 2 railway stations with frequent trains to Glasgow Central, Paisley and the Ayrshie Coast. Those hoping to explore further afar are 3.5 miles away from Glasgow International Airport and 40 minutes away by train from Prestwick International Airport. FAQs

How to cut artificial grass?
When you’re laying artificial grass, it’s pretty hard to not get some wastage somewhere. Whether you’re laying it up against a hard edge like decking or a patio or you’re fitting the artificial grass right up to a fence or wall, you’re probably going to have to cut it somewhere. So how do you do it without damaging the artificial grass?
  1. If you’re cutting artificial grass at a fence or wall, fold over the turf so you can see where the backing material meets the edge.
  2. Using a very sharp pen knife, cut the backing material into the perimeter, using it to guide the blade.
  3. Push the artificial grass back against fence or wall and check that you’ve cut away enough. It’s always best to err on the side of caution and cut less to begin with.
  4. When you’re happy, brush the pile to make it look natural.
Cutting up to a patio or decking If you’re installing artificial grass up to a patio or garden edge, you can use a pen knife to cut away just the outer tuft and the factory edge – that's the part of the backing material with no blades of grass attached to it. Cutting artificial grass to prepare for a seam If you’re cutting a piece of artificial grass to make a seam to join it to another piece, use your pen knife to cut away the outer 3 tufts and the factory edge. Top tip: Make sure you use a good quality, new and sharp blade to cut your artificial grass to get a nice clean cut and avoid fraying the edges of the backing material.
Can you hoover artificial grass?
While you might see some people hoovering their artificial grass, it’s not recommended. Using a household vacuum cleaner on your artificial grass could suck up and remove the blades of grass, creating patches and making it look as bad as a balding natural lawn. Also, artificial grass blades are made from tough plastics like nylon and polyurethane. The blades could easily clog up your hoover and damage it, so it’s best to steer clear of using it to clean your artificial turf. What can I use instead of a vacuum cleaner? A good old rake or broom can get rid of leaves and debris from your artificial grass, but you may miss smaller pieces like pet hair or sand and gravel. If you have a leaf blower, you can use this on a low setting – but be careful as you could blow away the sand infill that keep your artificial lawn looking springy and fresh. Luckily, there are artificial lawn power brooms available to buy, and this could be a good option over hoovering your artificial grass. They are electrically powered brushes that push away dirt rather than sucking it up, and they can even plump your lawn to keep it looking at its best. Even if you don’t hoover your artificial grass, it’s still likely that over time some sand infill will get carried away. To keep your lawn bouncy, ask your installer to top up the sand every now and again or have a go at doing it yourself.
How to lay artificial grass on concrete?

Laying artificial grass on concrete needs a slightly different approach to if you’re installing it over soil. The good news is that it’s much less labour intensive, as you don’t need to do any digging or levelling.

Ideally, your concrete base should be in good condition, and have an adequate fall on it to provide efficient drainage. If it doesn’t, you might have to do some repair work or drill some drainage holes first.

When you’re ready to start, begin by cleaning your concrete base. Use a jet wash or a hose and brush to dislodge and disperse any dirt or plant growth. Once it’s clean, leave it to dry completely.

Then, you need to fit an underlay - usually it’s made of foam. This will provide padding to make your artificial grass softer and more comfortable to walk on. It will also help to level out any slopes on uneven parts on the concrete. Make sure it’s a good-quality underlay that’s permeable – if it’s not, you could end up with damp artificial grass and nasty smells as it will hold moisture. Roll out the underlay and cut it to shape, taping any separate sections together.

Next, use an adhesive to secure the underlay to your concrete. Make sure you leave gaps in the adhesive to allow water to drain off easily. Leave the glue to dry, then you can start laying your grass.

Roll out your grass like you did with your underlay, cutting it to shape and joining any separate sections together with artificial grass tape. Then glue the grass to the underlay. Leave it dry, give the grass a brush, and it’ll be ready to use!

How to join artificial grass?
If you’re covering a larger area with artificial grass, you may need to join sections together. You can do this using self-adhesive joining tape, or joining tape and a separate adhesive. Steps to join artificial grass
  1. Unroll your two pieces of artificial grass, ensuring that the pile is running in the same direction. Fold over each piece by about 300m.
  2. To get the perfect seam, cut at least 3 tufts back, ensuring that you don’t trim any grass blades.
  3. Either remove the backing on your self-adhesive tape and unroll it down the centre of the join, or roll it out ensuring that the shiny side is down then fix at either end with adhesive.
  4. Fold over the grass onto the tape and bring each piece together, ensuring there’s a 2-3mm gap at the seam.
  5. Where the pile runs over the edge of the seam, fold over the artificial grass.
  6. Apply a small amount of adhesive under the edge of the first section of grass with a mastic gun, then add some to the front edge to stick the second piece.
  7. Bring the seam together, ensuring that you don’t get any grass blades stuck. Place a plank with some heavy objects on over the join to ensure that it dries securely.
It’s not that difficult to join artificial grass, but if you have any doubt leave it to the professionals. Get in touch with a few artificial grass companies who will be able to tell you how much it will cost to lay artificial turf for you.
