Artexing in Newport Pagnell

Artex is a product used for surface decorating inside the interior of homes. It is commonly worked with to add a textured surface to ceilings. Artex remains popular in place of smooth plaster ceilings, and a professional painter and decorator will be able to apply artex in a number of different textured design finishes. Artex relates to a specific manufacturer, but there are more manufacturers who make equivalent materials. Older artex ceilings may be repaired as well, with many different materials and applicators available in order to make this task as easy as possible. There exists a wide variety of different choices for the styles of texture which artex can be used to produce. Stipple, swirl, or shell effects may be applied, all of which can be performed as a DIY task relatively easily. Knowledgeable painters and decorators will be able to explore with you what style would be most suitable for your space, and guarantee that artex is applied in an excellent quality and consistent surface. Artex can also be painted over, and deciding on a colour that enhances the texture of the surface area can enhance an old ceiling and breathe life into an area.

Newport Pagnell

The town of Newport Pagnell is found in the English county of Buckinghamshire. The earliest citation of the town on record can be seen in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Neuport', which is Old English for 'New Market Town'. A citation of 'Pagnell' in the town's name is located in records after the manor became the home of the Pagnell family. Previously among Buckingham's largest towns, with the assize courts often being held there, the growth of Milton Keynes had a rather negative impact on the town that was known for providing two medical facilities and providing 6 fairs throughout the year for its residents. Tickford Bridge, located over the River Ouzel, is significant for its status as the earliest iron bridge on the planet remaining to stand up to continuous use. A plaque by the footbridge at the side of the bridge gives the details of its history and building, which was positioned there by Newport Pagnell Historical Society. According to the 2001 Census, the town has a permanent population of around 15020, which, though increasing significantly from the 6000 inhabitants recorded in the 1971 Census, the Borough Council forecasts will remain mainly the same for the foreseeable future. Numerous sports activities can be taken part in and observed in the town. The Newport Pagnell Town F.C., referred to as the Swans, is the town's non-league football team who play at The Pavilion on Willen Road. An ITF Taekwon-Do club, Kicks Taekwon-Do Academy, train at Cedars Primary School, and there is a pool. Newport Pagnell is particularly well-known for its service facility, which was completely modernised in 2012. For all of your house upgrades, ensure to make use of dependable professionals in Newport Pagnell to make certain of quality.

FAQs

How to paint an artex ceiling?

It’s possible to paint your artex ceiling if you want to smarten it up or make it a different colour.

If it’s never been painted before, you’ll need to paint it with a PVA-based solution or water-thinned paint layer to start with. You may want to scrape or sand off any loose or peeling patches beforehand, but only do this if you’re sure that the artex doesn’t contain any asbestos.

Once you’ve done this, follow with two coats of your paint of choice – ideally an emulsion. If your artex ceiling has been painted before then you can paint directly without priming. However, if you’re painting over a particularly bold colour with a lighter one, you might want apply a layer of white paint first.

How to artex a ceiling?

Artexing a ceiling can be a tricky job, but whether you’re considering hiring a professional or DIY, it’s helpful to know how it’s done.

Artex is available either in a paste or powder form. The paste is ideal if you’re making small repairs or additions to an existing ceiling. But, if you have a whole ceiling to cover, the powder is more cost effective. When you’re ready to get started, you’ll need to mix the powder up with cold water according to the instructions.

It’s possible to artex over plaster, plasterboard or paint. If you have a plasterboard surface, you should tape and fill any joints or cracks before you begin. Plaster and plasterboard both require a coat of sealant or primer first. You can usually artex straight over paint, but any gloss paint should be sanded down, and any dark paints covered with a layer of white.

Artexing can get quite messy, so make sure you empty the room you’re working in as much as possible, lay down sheets and wear protective clothing and glasses. You might want to practice on a piece of board before you start on the ceiling.

Start by using a brush or roller to cover a 500 square cm area with a generous layer of artex. Then use a brush, comb or roller to create your chosen texture. Every time you do a new section of ceiling, try to blend it with the other sections you’ve done. Don’t be tempted to cover the whole ceiling before you start adding texture – the artex will dry too quickly for you to do it all in time.

Artex usually needs 12-24 hours in a well-ventilated space to dry completely.

Does artex contain asbestos?

Artex was originally made using white asbestos to make it stronger. However, this stopped in the mid-1980s, and the use of asbestos was banned in the UK in 1999, due to its extreme health risks. So, any artex you buy today won’t contain asbestos.

If you have an artex ceiling or wall that was created before 1999, it may have asbestos in it. This won’t be a health hazard if you leave it undisturbed, so it’s not necessary to remove it. However, if you want to get rid of or alter your artex ceiling or wall, you must get it tested to check if it has asbestos in or not first. If it does, you’ll need to hire a qualified professional to work on it.

Can you plaster over artex?

If your artex ceiling is looking tired or you just fancy a change, you can try plastering over your artex. You have two options when it comes to plastering over your artex: plasterboard or skimming.

Covering your ceiling with plasterboard is a good option if you suspect the artex may contain asbestos. If done carefully, it doesn’t involve disturbing the artex, reducing the risk of asbestos exposure.

You also have the option to skim over your ceiling. The first steps to this involve removing loose and flaking parts, cutting off stipples and sanding your ceiling down. So, if there’s a chance your artex ceiling may contain asbestos, this isn’t the right solution for you. However, if you’re sure there’s no asbestos in your ceiling, then sanding down and skimming over your ceiling can be a great way to create an attractive result.

It’s worth noting that both putting up plasterboard and skimming plaster can be difficult jobs. Although possible to DIY, you’re likely to get much better results if you hire a professional.
