Artexing in Lewes

Artex is a product utilised for decorating surfaces throughout the interior of homes. It is commonly employed to add a textured surface to ceilings. Artex remains in demand as another option to smooth plaster ceilings, and an expert painter and decorator can apply artex in numerous different textured style appearances. Artex describes a specific manufacturer, however there are other manufacturers who make equivalent materials. Older artex ceilings can be restored as well, with a variety of products and applicators on the market in order to make this process as quick as possible. There exists a wide selection of different choices when it comes to the types of texture that artex may be used to produce. Stipple, swirl, or shell effects may be administered, all of which could be undertaken as a Do It Yourself task comparatively easily. Knowledgeable painters and decorators can discuss with you what effect would suit your space, and guarantee that artex is administered in a top quality and uniform appearance. Artex may be painted over, and deciding on a shade which goes well with the texture of the surface area can improve a tired ceiling and breathe life into a space.

Lewes

Lewes is the county town of the administrative county of East Sussex in England. It is a civil parish and it is the centre of the Lewes local government district. In accordance with the 2001 Census, it has a population of around 15988 and an area of 4.4 square miles. In the past, the town has been identified as a bridging point and a market town, and it is mostly deemed a communications and tourist-oriented town in the present as a result of the multiple historic sites. The historical pattern of the streets continues to exist, including a significant number of mediaeval building plots and oak framed houses, such as The Fifteenth Century Bookshop found on the High Street. The service industries are the greatest employers to a substantial extent, with over 60 per cent of the population employed in that sector in 2001. Having said that, the town continues to be honoured as one of England's finest producers of ale, with beers, wines and spirits continuing to be distributed from Lewes under the 'Harveys' name ever since 1794. An occasion with special value for the town is the Lewes Bonfire festivities taking place on 5th November, Guy Fawkes Night. Not only does this remember the date of the unmasking of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605, the date is also important for the town as a celebration for the 17 Protestant martyrs burnt at the stake for their faith throughout the Marian Persecutions. The controversial celebration which incorporates the burning of an effigy of Pope Paul V, the pope during the time of the martyrdoms, are the biggest and most renowned bonfire night celebrations in England. FAQs

What is artex?

Artex is a type of interior surface coating, similar to plaster. It’s used to create decorative textured finishes on ceilings and walls, so it takes longer to dry than plaster.

Artex is actually a brand name, but it’s used to refer to similar products made by other manufacturers too. It was particularly popular in the 1970s, but is still used to create attractive wall and ceiling finishes today.

Does artex contain asbestos?

Artex was originally made using white asbestos to make it stronger. However, this stopped in the mid-1980s, and the use of asbestos was banned in the UK in 1999, due to its extreme health risks. So, any artex you buy today won’t contain asbestos.

If you have an artex ceiling or wall that was created before 1999, it may have asbestos in it. This won’t be a health hazard if you leave it undisturbed, so it’s not necessary to remove it. However, if you want to get rid of or alter your artex ceiling or wall, you must get it tested to check if it has asbestos in or not first. If it does, you’ll need to hire a qualified professional to work on it.

How to paint an artex ceiling?

It’s possible to paint your artex ceiling if you want to smarten it up or make it a different colour.

If it’s never been painted before, you’ll need to paint it with a PVA-based solution or water-thinned paint layer to start with. You may want to scrape or sand off any loose or peeling patches beforehand, but only do this if you’re sure that the artex doesn’t contain any asbestos.

Once you’ve done this, follow with two coats of your paint of choice – ideally an emulsion. If your artex ceiling has been painted before then you can paint directly without priming. However, if you’re painting over a particularly bold colour with a lighter one, you might want apply a layer of white paint first.

Can you plaster over artex?

If your artex ceiling is looking tired or you just fancy a change, you can try plastering over your artex. You have two options when it comes to plastering over your artex: plasterboard or skimming.

Covering your ceiling with plasterboard is a good option if you suspect the artex may contain asbestos. If done carefully, it doesn’t involve disturbing the artex, reducing the risk of asbestos exposure.

You also have the option to skim over your ceiling. The first steps to this involve removing loose and flaking parts, cutting off stipples and sanding your ceiling down. So, if there’s a chance your artex ceiling may contain asbestos, this isn’t the right solution for you. However, if you’re sure there’s no asbestos in your ceiling, then sanding down and skimming over your ceiling can be a great way to create an attractive result.

It’s worth noting that both putting up plasterboard and skimming plaster can be difficult jobs. Although possible to DIY, you’re likely to get much better results if you hire a professional.
