Artex is a product utilised for surface decorating inside home interiors. It is commonly used to apply a textured surface to ceilings. Artex continues to be popular as an alternative to smooth plaster ceilings, and a highly skilled painter and decorator can apply artex in various different textured style appearances. Artex is a particular brand, however there are various manufacturers who create similar products. Older artex ceilings may be restored as well, with various materials and applicators available for purchase in order to help make this procedure as effortless as possible. There exists a wide range of different options for the sorts of texture which artex may be applied in. Stipple, swirl, or shell effects may be applied, all of which could be completed as a DIY job relatively easily. Experienced painters and decorators can discuss with you which finish would best match your room, and ensure that artex is applied in a quality and uniform surface. Artex can also be painted over, and opting for a shade that matches the texture of the surface area can invigorate an old ceiling and breathe life into an area.

Lee-on-the-solent

Lee-on-the-Solent is a small seaside district in the Borough of Gosport in the English county of Hampshire. Set on the coast of the Solent separating mainland England from the Isle of Wight, it is approximately 5 miles from Portsmouth. The district obtained its name in the 19th century, at a time of proposals being made to establish the area as a trendy seaside resort. Physical modifications to the region also occurred during this time, with the creation of Mine Parade, a pier, a railway connection and a variety of prominent red brick vacation homes all taking place in the time between 1884 and 1894. The train service was ceased in the 1930s, and the damage to the pier after the 2nd World War caused its demolition in 1958. Although predominantly a suburb, having a population of around 20000, it continues to witness a surge of tourists and visitors over the summer season. The district also continues to have a lively shopping centre, offering a large variety of independent and commercial chain shops and eateries. The closure of the rail line cleared the coastal cliffs, enabling for walking and leisure activities. An enticing attribute of Lee is the constantly altering views out to sea from the cliffs. Observable from the grassy banks are large container ships, cruise ships moving into Southampton and Portsmouth and the backdrop of the Isle of Wight. Lee is known most notably for being the home to the Royal Naval Air Station HMS Daedalus. In spite of its closure in 1966, it remains active as a civil airfield. For all your home upgrades, make certain to make use of reputable experts in Lee-on-the-Solent to make certain of quality.

FAQs

How to paint an artex ceiling?

It’s possible to paint your artex ceiling if you want to smarten it up or make it a different colour.

If it’s never been painted before, you’ll need to paint it with a PVA-based solution or water-thinned paint layer to start with. You may want to scrape or sand off any loose or peeling patches beforehand, but only do this if you’re sure that the artex doesn’t contain any asbestos.

Once you’ve done this, follow with two coats of your paint of choice – ideally an emulsion. If your artex ceiling has been painted before then you can paint directly without priming. However, if you’re painting over a particularly bold colour with a lighter one, you might want apply a layer of white paint first.

Does artex contain asbestos?

Artex was originally made using white asbestos to make it stronger. However, this stopped in the mid-1980s, and the use of asbestos was banned in the UK in 1999, due to its extreme health risks. So, any artex you buy today won’t contain asbestos.

If you have an artex ceiling or wall that was created before 1999, it may have asbestos in it. This won’t be a health hazard if you leave it undisturbed, so it’s not necessary to remove it. However, if you want to get rid of or alter your artex ceiling or wall, you must get it tested to check if it has asbestos in or not first. If it does, you’ll need to hire a qualified professional to work on it.

Can you plaster over artex?

If your artex ceiling is looking tired or you just fancy a change, you can try plastering over your artex. You have two options when it comes to plastering over your artex: plasterboard or skimming.

Covering your ceiling with plasterboard is a good option if you suspect the artex may contain asbestos. If done carefully, it doesn’t involve disturbing the artex, reducing the risk of asbestos exposure.

You also have the option to skim over your ceiling. The first steps to this involve removing loose and flaking parts, cutting off stipples and sanding your ceiling down. So, if there’s a chance your artex ceiling may contain asbestos, this isn’t the right solution for you. However, if you’re sure there’s no asbestos in your ceiling, then sanding down and skimming over your ceiling can be a great way to create an attractive result.

It’s worth noting that both putting up plasterboard and skimming plaster can be difficult jobs. Although possible to DIY, you’re likely to get much better results if you hire a professional.

How to artex a ceiling?

Artexing a ceiling can be a tricky job, but whether you’re considering hiring a professional or DIY, it’s helpful to know how it’s done.

Artex is available either in a paste or powder form. The paste is ideal if you’re making small repairs or additions to an existing ceiling. But, if you have a whole ceiling to cover, the powder is more cost effective. When you’re ready to get started, you’ll need to mix the powder up with cold water according to the instructions.

It’s possible to artex over plaster, plasterboard or paint. If you have a plasterboard surface, you should tape and fill any joints or cracks before you begin. Plaster and plasterboard both require a coat of sealant or primer first. You can usually artex straight over paint, but any gloss paint should be sanded down, and any dark paints covered with a layer of white.

Artexing can get quite messy, so make sure you empty the room you’re working in as much as possible, lay down sheets and wear protective clothing and glasses. You might want to practice on a piece of board before you start on the ceiling.

Start by using a brush or roller to cover a 500 square cm area with a generous layer of artex. Then use a brush, comb or roller to create your chosen texture. Every time you do a new section of ceiling, try to blend it with the other sections you’ve done. Don’t be tempted to cover the whole ceiling before you start adding texture – the artex will dry too quickly for you to do it all in time.

Artex usually needs 12-24 hours in a well-ventilated space to dry completely.
