Artexing in Leatherhead

Artex is a substance used for surface decorating in home interiors. It is often chosen to add a textured surface to ceilings. Artex is still popular in place of smooth plaster ceilings, and a qualified painter and decorator can apply artex in a number of different textured design appearances. Artex refers to a particular brand, however there are alternative manufacturers who manufacture very similar products. Older artex ceilings may be refurbished as well. There are various products and applicators available for purchase in order to make this process as quick as possible. There is a variety of different alternatives when it comes to the types of texture which artex can be applied in. It could be administered in stipple, swirl, or shell effects, all of which could be undertaken as a DIY project comparatively easily. Experienced painters and decorators can examine with you what result would go with your space, and make sure that artex is put on in an excellent quality and consistent appearance. Artex may even be painted over, and selecting a colour that complements the texture of the surface area can renew a tired ceiling and breathe life into an area.

Leatherhead

Leatherhead is a town in Surrey, England on the right shore of the river Mole, and beside the adjoining built-up area of London. The town covers a total area of around 4.84 square miles. Its local district is Mole Valley. Records exist of the area from Anglo Saxon England. Just north-east of the midpoint of Surrey and at a junction of ancient north-- south and east-- west roads, features of the town have actually been a focus for transport throughout its history. A major early spur to this was the building and construction of the bridge over the seasonally accessible River Mole in the early medieval time period. Later the Swan Hotel provided 300 years of service to horse-drawn coaches. In the late 20th century the M25 motorway was constructed close by. In accordance with the 2011 Census, the town has a permanent population of around 11316 individuals. The town has re-developed periodically through differing economic demands and planning. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Mole Valley District Council made plans to modernise the town, with a brand-new pedestrianised high street and a sizeable one-way system. It has a merged theatre and movie theatre. Leatherhead's countless business facilities generate lunchtime demand and its restaurants and theatre draw in people from across Surrey. The undulating streetscape lends itself more to warm summer nights. The theatre (see listed below) is a cinema and has art exhibitions. The bypass streets to the town centre close and feature annually in the London-Surrey cycle classic which is ranked by the world's cycling federation. For all your home renovations, make certain to find professional specialists in Leatherhead to make certain of quality.

FAQs

Can you plaster over artex?

If your artex ceiling is looking tired or you just fancy a change, you can try plastering over your artex. You have two options when it comes to plastering over your artex: plasterboard or skimming.

Covering your ceiling with plasterboard is a good option if you suspect the artex may contain asbestos. If done carefully, it doesn’t involve disturbing the artex, reducing the risk of asbestos exposure.

You also have the option to skim over your ceiling. The first steps to this involve removing loose and flaking parts, cutting off stipples and sanding your ceiling down. So, if there’s a chance your artex ceiling may contain asbestos, this isn’t the right solution for you. However, if you’re sure there’s no asbestos in your ceiling, then sanding down and skimming over your ceiling can be a great way to create an attractive result.

It’s worth noting that both putting up plasterboard and skimming plaster can be difficult jobs. Although possible to DIY, you’re likely to get much better results if you hire a professional.

How to artex a ceiling?

Artexing a ceiling can be a tricky job, but whether you’re considering hiring a professional or DIY, it’s helpful to know how it’s done.

Artex is available either in a paste or powder form. The paste is ideal if you’re making small repairs or additions to an existing ceiling. But, if you have a whole ceiling to cover, the powder is more cost effective. When you’re ready to get started, you’ll need to mix the powder up with cold water according to the instructions.

It’s possible to artex over plaster, plasterboard or paint. If you have a plasterboard surface, you should tape and fill any joints or cracks before you begin. Plaster and plasterboard both require a coat of sealant or primer first. You can usually artex straight over paint, but any gloss paint should be sanded down, and any dark paints covered with a layer of white.

Artexing can get quite messy, so make sure you empty the room you’re working in as much as possible, lay down sheets and wear protective clothing and glasses. You might want to practice on a piece of board before you start on the ceiling.

Start by using a brush or roller to cover a 500 square cm area with a generous layer of artex. Then use a brush, comb or roller to create your chosen texture. Every time you do a new section of ceiling, try to blend it with the other sections you’ve done. Don’t be tempted to cover the whole ceiling before you start adding texture – the artex will dry too quickly for you to do it all in time.

Artex usually needs 12-24 hours in a well-ventilated space to dry completely.

Does artex contain asbestos?

Artex was originally made using white asbestos to make it stronger. However, this stopped in the mid-1980s, and the use of asbestos was banned in the UK in 1999, due to its extreme health risks. So, any artex you buy today won’t contain asbestos.

If you have an artex ceiling or wall that was created before 1999, it may have asbestos in it. This won’t be a health hazard if you leave it undisturbed, so it’s not necessary to remove it. However, if you want to get rid of or alter your artex ceiling or wall, you must get it tested to check if it has asbestos in or not first. If it does, you’ll need to hire a qualified professional to work on it.

What is artex?

Artex is a type of interior surface coating, similar to plaster. It’s used to create decorative textured finishes on ceilings and walls, so it takes longer to dry than plaster.

Artex is actually a brand name, but it’s used to refer to similar products made by other manufacturers too. It was particularly popular in the 1970s, but is still used to create attractive wall and ceiling finishes today.
