Artexing in Knutsford

Artex is a building material used for decorating surfaces in the inside of homes. It is generally put to use to add a textured surface to ceilings. Artex is still popular as a substitute to smooth plaster ceilings, and an expert painter and decorator should be able to apply artex in various different textured design finishes. Artex is a particular brand name, however there are alternative manufacturers who produce very similar materials. Older artex ceilings may be refurbished as well, with a range materials and applicators available in order to help make this process as quick as possible. There's a wide range of different alternatives for the sorts of texture that artex could be applied in. Stipple, swirl, or shell effects may be applied, all of which is often completed as a Do It Yourself job comparatively easily. Professional painters and decorators can review with you what design would suit your space, and guarantee that artex is administered in a quality and uniform surface. Artex can even be painted over, and deciding on a colour which goes well with the texture of the surface can enhance a tired ceiling and breathe life into an area.

Knutsford

Knutsford, situateded in the county of Cheshire, lies in Northern England simply 14 miles southwest of Manchester. The town, which boasts a population of around 13,500, sits amongst several historical sites such as Tatton Park, Peover Hall and Arley Hall, all of which are popular visitor attractions. Thanks to its position in the U.K., geographically Knutsford is the home of lively landscapes, situated next to Cheshire's Golden Triangle, and on the land in between the Peak District and the westerly Welsh mountains. The town's name derives back to the times of William the Conqueror's, who nicknamed the hamlet as 'Canute's Ford', in 1086, which subsequently evolved to exactly what it is today. Knutsford is a well-connected settlement, making domestic homes particularly sought after. Alongside a regional rail station, road access includes junctions to the M6 and M56. Aside from this, the A50 runs right through the heart of the town, connecting the traders to the outside world making Knutsford a town open for business and not a closed, remote neighborhood. For those looking to go further afar, Manchester Airport is a very short 5 miles drive away from Knutsford itself. FAQs

Can you plaster over artex?

If your artex ceiling is looking tired or you just fancy a change, you can try plastering over your artex. You have two options when it comes to plastering over your artex: plasterboard or skimming.

Covering your ceiling with plasterboard is a good option if you suspect the artex may contain asbestos. If done carefully, it doesn’t involve disturbing the artex, reducing the risk of asbestos exposure.

You also have the option to skim over your ceiling. The first steps to this involve removing loose and flaking parts, cutting off stipples and sanding your ceiling down. So, if there’s a chance your artex ceiling may contain asbestos, this isn’t the right solution for you. However, if you’re sure there’s no asbestos in your ceiling, then sanding down and skimming over your ceiling can be a great way to create an attractive result.

It’s worth noting that both putting up plasterboard and skimming plaster can be difficult jobs. Although possible to DIY, you’re likely to get much better results if you hire a professional.

What is artex?

Artex is a type of interior surface coating, similar to plaster. It’s used to create decorative textured finishes on ceilings and walls, so it takes longer to dry than plaster.

Artex is actually a brand name, but it’s used to refer to similar products made by other manufacturers too. It was particularly popular in the 1970s, but is still used to create attractive wall and ceiling finishes today.

How to artex a ceiling?

Artexing a ceiling can be a tricky job, but whether you’re considering hiring a professional or DIY, it’s helpful to know how it’s done.

Artex is available either in a paste or powder form. The paste is ideal if you’re making small repairs or additions to an existing ceiling. But, if you have a whole ceiling to cover, the powder is more cost effective. When you’re ready to get started, you’ll need to mix the powder up with cold water according to the instructions.

It’s possible to artex over plaster, plasterboard or paint. If you have a plasterboard surface, you should tape and fill any joints or cracks before you begin. Plaster and plasterboard both require a coat of sealant or primer first. You can usually artex straight over paint, but any gloss paint should be sanded down, and any dark paints covered with a layer of white.

Artexing can get quite messy, so make sure you empty the room you’re working in as much as possible, lay down sheets and wear protective clothing and glasses. You might want to practice on a piece of board before you start on the ceiling.

Start by using a brush or roller to cover a 500 square cm area with a generous layer of artex. Then use a brush, comb or roller to create your chosen texture. Every time you do a new section of ceiling, try to blend it with the other sections you’ve done. Don’t be tempted to cover the whole ceiling before you start adding texture – the artex will dry too quickly for you to do it all in time.

Artex usually needs 12-24 hours in a well-ventilated space to dry completely.

How to paint an artex ceiling?

It’s possible to paint your artex ceiling if you want to smarten it up or make it a different colour.

If it’s never been painted before, you’ll need to paint it with a PVA-based solution or water-thinned paint layer to start with. You may want to scrape or sand off any loose or peeling patches beforehand, but only do this if you’re sure that the artex doesn’t contain any asbestos.

Once you’ve done this, follow with two coats of your paint of choice – ideally an emulsion. If your artex ceiling has been painted before then you can paint directly without priming. However, if you’re painting over a particularly bold colour with a lighter one, you might want apply a layer of white paint first.
