Artexing in Ashbourne

Artex is a substance utilised for surface decorating within the inside of homes. It is generally put to use to apply a textured surface to ceilings. Artex remains fashionable in place of smooth plaster ceilings, and a qualified painter and decorator will be able to apply artex in a number of different textured style finishes. Artex identifies a particular brand, however there are other manufacturers who make very similar materials. Older artex ceilings may be restored as well. There are an assortment products and applicators available in order to make this procedure as effortless as possible. There's a number of different options for the designs of texture that artex may be applied in. Stipple, swirl, or shell effects could be applied, all of which can be completed as a DIY job reasonably easily. Experienced painters and decorators can examine with you what design would be most suitable for your space, and guarantee that artex is administered to create a quality and consistent finish. Artex can also be painted over, and opting for a shade that suits the texture of the surface can rejuvenate an old ceiling and breathe life into a space.

Ashbourne

Ashbourne is a market town within the Derbyshire Dales in England. Because of its proximity to the southern edge of the Peak District and being the nearest town to the well-liked location of Dovedale, the town is generally known as both the 'Gateway to Dovedale' and the 'Gateway to the Peak District'. Due to this tourism has constantly been important for the town's economy. According to the 2011 Census, the town boasts a resident population of approximately 8377 inhabitants. It contains many historical buildings and several independent shops and is renowned for its traditional yearly Shrovetide football match. The cobbled market hosts a traditional outdoor market each Thursday and Saturday throughout the year, complementing the wide selection of individual shops within the town. Even though its market heritage is very important, Ashbourne's market was threatened with closure by Derbyshire County Council in November 2012. Residents of Ashbourne have stood against any such moves by the council and began an online petition. Ashbourne became the 97th Fairtrade Town in March 2005 after lots of local companies, cafes, shops and community organisations started supporting Fairtrade. Ashbourne features a substantial variety of public houses for a very small town centre. At present, you'll find ten pubs trading, along with two social clubs. The renowned and rare 'gallows' sign across St John's Street is still central meeting point in the town. Local historians have noted that nearly 1 in 4 buildings inside the town have at one time or another been an alehouse, pub or inn or underwent renovations on the site of such an establishment. For all of your house upgrades, be sure that you use trusted professionals in Ashbourne to make sure that you get the very best quality service.

FAQs

How to paint an artex ceiling?

It’s possible to paint your artex ceiling if you want to smarten it up or make it a different colour.

If it’s never been painted before, you’ll need to paint it with a PVA-based solution or water-thinned paint layer to start with. You may want to scrape or sand off any loose or peeling patches beforehand, but only do this if you’re sure that the artex doesn’t contain any asbestos.

Once you’ve done this, follow with two coats of your paint of choice – ideally an emulsion. If your artex ceiling has been painted before then you can paint directly without priming. However, if you’re painting over a particularly bold colour with a lighter one, you might want apply a layer of white paint first.

How to artex a ceiling?

Artexing a ceiling can be a tricky job, but whether you’re considering hiring a professional or DIY, it’s helpful to know how it’s done.

Artex is available either in a paste or powder form. The paste is ideal if you’re making small repairs or additions to an existing ceiling. But, if you have a whole ceiling to cover, the powder is more cost effective. When you’re ready to get started, you’ll need to mix the powder up with cold water according to the instructions.

It’s possible to artex over plaster, plasterboard or paint. If you have a plasterboard surface, you should tape and fill any joints or cracks before you begin. Plaster and plasterboard both require a coat of sealant or primer first. You can usually artex straight over paint, but any gloss paint should be sanded down, and any dark paints covered with a layer of white.

Artexing can get quite messy, so make sure you empty the room you’re working in as much as possible, lay down sheets and wear protective clothing and glasses. You might want to practice on a piece of board before you start on the ceiling.

Start by using a brush or roller to cover a 500 square cm area with a generous layer of artex. Then use a brush, comb or roller to create your chosen texture. Every time you do a new section of ceiling, try to blend it with the other sections you’ve done. Don’t be tempted to cover the whole ceiling before you start adding texture – the artex will dry too quickly for you to do it all in time.

Artex usually needs 12-24 hours in a well-ventilated space to dry completely.

Can you plaster over artex?

If your artex ceiling is looking tired or you just fancy a change, you can try plastering over your artex. You have two options when it comes to plastering over your artex: plasterboard or skimming.

Covering your ceiling with plasterboard is a good option if you suspect the artex may contain asbestos. If done carefully, it doesn’t involve disturbing the artex, reducing the risk of asbestos exposure.

You also have the option to skim over your ceiling. The first steps to this involve removing loose and flaking parts, cutting off stipples and sanding your ceiling down. So, if there’s a chance your artex ceiling may contain asbestos, this isn’t the right solution for you. However, if you’re sure there’s no asbestos in your ceiling, then sanding down and skimming over your ceiling can be a great way to create an attractive result.

It’s worth noting that both putting up plasterboard and skimming plaster can be difficult jobs. Although possible to DIY, you’re likely to get much better results if you hire a professional.

What is artex?

Artex is a type of interior surface coating, similar to plaster. It’s used to create decorative textured finishes on ceilings and walls, so it takes longer to dry than plaster.

Artex is actually a brand name, but it’s used to refer to similar products made by other manufacturers too. It was particularly popular in the 1970s, but is still used to create attractive wall and ceiling finishes today.
