Bingley is a market town in the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford located in West Yorkshire, England. The town sits on the River Aire along with the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and is situated in Airedale on the south of Ilkley Moor. The population has recently witnessed a decline, having a population of around 19,884 in 2001 and decreasing to around 18,000 as recorded in the 2011 Census. The meaning of the town's name is interpreted as 'Bing's Clearing' and is Saxon in origin. The town's initial settlement served the ford across the River Aire at the narrowest point of the Aire Valley, and Ireland Bridge was created in 1986 with the intention of replacing the ford. A lot of the older history of the town is still present within the town, for instance the Bingley Grammar School, established in the sixteenth century, which is considered to be one of the oldest schools in the country. Bingley contains an abundance of local outlets, a street market, banks along with the 'Little Theatre'. There are also efficient transportation links in the town, with a railway station positioned in the town centre as well as the Leeds Bradford Airport nearby. Barges on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal navigate the Bingley Five Rise Locks, with people frequently viewing barges navigating the locks. Because of its mostly unspoilt habitat, walking and biking in the town proves popular, and golfers can play at the Bingley St. Ives Golf Club. An annual music festival, Bingley Music Live, is held at Myrtle Park, boasting a selection of top quality music attracting a considerable audience.
