The London Borough of Southwark in south London, England forms part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames to the City of London. It was formed in 1965 when three smaller council places amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. This incorporated the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, as well as the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey. All districts of the area are inside the London postal district.
It borders the City of London and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets towards the north, with the River Thames forming the boundary, the London Borough of Lambeth towards the west along with the London Borough of Lewisham towards the east. Towards the south are the London Boroughs of Bromley and Croydon. In accordance with population estimates created in the middle of 2014, Southwark features a permanent population of around 302538 inhabitants.
The borough is residence to many cultural, historical and notable attractions. The Shard, Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and Borough Market that are the largest of the venues in Southwark to draw domestic and international tourism. Dulwich is home to the Dulwich Picture Gallery along with the Imperial War Museum in Elephant and Castle.
